Viking Oven F06: Control Board Relay Failure
F06 on Viking ovens indicates the control board detected a failure in one of its internal relays — the mechanical switches that route power to heating elements, igniters, and the door lock motor. The board's self-monitoring circuit detected that a relay is either stuck open (won't energize) or stuck closed (won't de-energize).
Viking's Commercial-Grade Relay Load
Viking oven control boards handle heavier current loads than consumer boards because they control:
- Higher-wattage bake and broil elements (3,000-4,500W)
- Gas igniter circuits with higher-current hot surface igniters
- Larger door lock motors
- Convection fan motors rated for Viking's higher-velocity airflow
This higher current load accelerates relay contact wear, making F06 somewhat more common on Viking than consumer brands. Relay contacts arc each time they open under load, gradually pitting the contact surfaces until they either weld shut or erode enough to prevent contact.

Diagnosis
F06 is almost always a board-level fault — the relay is soldered onto the control board and cannot be replaced independently in the field.
- Power off at breaker
- Access the control board (behind the control panel or in the control housing)
- Visual inspection: look for darkened or cracked relay housings, burn marks on the board around relay pads, or discolored solder joints
- If available, measure relay coil resistance (accessed via the board connector) — the tech sheet may provide specifications
Board Replacement vs Board Repair
Viking control boards are expensive ($300-$550). Board-level repair services can sometimes replace the failed relay for $100-$200, but turnaround is 1-3 weeks. This is a viable option for discontinued boards.
