Speed Queen Dryer HL: Heater Lockout — Overtemperature Protection Activated
HL stands for Heater Lockout — the control board has permanently disabled the heating system after detecting sustained over-temperature conditions. Unlike AF (which is a warning), HL is a lockout that requires manual intervention to clear. The dryer will tumble but will not heat until the underlying cause is resolved and the lockout is reset.
What Triggers HL
HL activates when the outlet thermistor reports temperatures exceeding the maximum safe limit for three or more consecutive cycles. The board interprets this pattern as a persistent dangerous condition rather than a one-time anomaly.
Common triggers:
Severe vent blockage: A vent so restricted that exhaust temperatures spike dangerously high. AF should have appeared first — HL means the vent problem was ignored or worsened.
Failed cycling thermostat: The cycling thermostat that regulates heater on/off cycles has failed in the closed position, keeping the heater energized continuously rather than cycling. Temperature overshoots the set point.
Heater element grounding: A heating element that has developed a ground fault (touching the heater housing) can cause intermittent or continuous over-temperature conditions.

Resetting HL
HL cannot be cleared by simply powering off and on. To reset:
- Fix the underlying cause (vent blockage, failed thermostat, grounded element)
- Power off the dryer at the breaker
- Wait 10 minutes
- Power on while pressing and holding the appropriate reset sequence for your model (consult tech sheet — typically pressing two specific buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds)
- If the root cause is truly fixed, HL clears and the heater re-enables
Diagnosis
- Clean the entire vent system thoroughly (see AF diagnosis)
- Test the cycling thermostat: should open (no continuity) at its rated temperature and close when cool
- Test the heating element insulation: measure between each element terminal and the dryer chassis. Should read OL (infinity). Any measurable resistance = ground fault
- Test the high-limit thermostat: this safety device should be closed at room temperature. If open, it has already tripped from overheating — replace it after fixing the root cause

Parts and Pricing
| Part | Speed Queen Number | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Cycling thermostat | 504515 or model-specific | $15-$30 |
| High-limit thermostat | 504516 | $10-$20 |
| Heating element (electric) | Varies | $45-$85 |
| Gas valve coils (gas models) | Varies | $15-$30 |
Professional repair: $175-$400. The diagnosis is more important than the part cost — identifying why the dryer overheated prevents recurrence.
