Maytag Oven F5-E1: Door Lock Mechanism Failure
F5-E1 means the oven door lock did not reach the commanded position within the timeout period. The lock engages for self-clean cycles (to prevent opening the door at 900+ degrees F) and sometimes for delayed start features. F5-E1 indicates the lock motor ran but the position switch did not confirm engagement.
How the Oven Door Lock Works
The door lock sits at the top-front of the oven frame, above the door opening. It consists of:
- A lock motor (small AC or DC motor with a gear train) that drives a sliding lock arm
- A lock arm that physically blocks the door from opening when extended
- Position switches (2) — one confirms "locked" position, one confirms "unlocked" position
- A manual release lever (some models) for emergency unlocking
The lock motor is geared down for high torque — the lock arm moves slowly (10-20 seconds for full travel). The ERC board supplies power to the motor and monitors the position switches.

F5-E1 Causes
1. Worn Gear Train (35% of Cases)
The lock motor's plastic gear train strips over time. The motor spins but the lock arm does not move. Common after 200+ self-clean cycles (most ovens see 2-4 self-clean cycles per year, so this is a 50+ year failure mode under normal use — but some users run self-clean monthly, reaching gear train failure in 5-8 years).
Diagnosis: Listen at the lock area when self-clean starts. Motor humming without lock arm movement = stripped gears. Motor silent = electrical failure.
2. Misaligned Lock Arm (25% of Cases)
The lock arm slides in a channel along the top of the oven frame. If the oven was serviced and the top panel was not properly reseated, or if the oven has been bumped, the arm can bind in its channel.
Fix: Remove the top panel (usually 2-4 screws at the rear). Observe the lock arm channel — clean any debris and verify the arm slides freely end-to-end. Apply a thin film of high-temperature grease to the channel.
3. Position Switch Failure (20% of Cases)
The micro-switches that confirm lock position fail from thermal cycling and age. The lock arm reaches full travel but the switch does not close.
Test: Manually push the lock arm to full "locked" position. Measure continuity across the lock switch — should read 0 ohms. No continuity = failed switch. The switches are sometimes individually replaceable; on some models, the entire lock assembly must be replaced.
4. Motor Failure (15% of Cases)
The lock motor itself fails — open winding, seized bearing, or thermal fuse integrated into the motor trips.
5. ERC Board Lock Relay (5% of Cases)
The relay on the ERC board that supplies power to the lock motor fails. No voltage reaches the motor.
Lock Assembly Replacement
Part: Lock assembly varies by model. Common: WPW10107820, $45-80.
Replacement involves removing the oven top panel and the lock assembly's 2-4 mounting screws. Disconnect the wire connector. Install new assembly in reverse. Total time: 30-45 minutes.

Can You Still Bake with F5-E1?
On most Maytag ovens, F5-E1 only prevents self-clean from starting. Normal bake and broil functions remain available because the door lock is not required for standard cooking. However, if the lock arm is stuck in the locked position (door physically cannot open), you need to use the manual release lever or disconnect the lock motor to retract the arm.
Cost

| Position switch (if separate) | $10-20 | $100-160 |
