Before troubleshooting, identify what activates. If the magnetron or cooking cycle starts, unplug the unit at once — that is the hazardous case. If only the exhaust fan runs on an over-the-range model, that is often normal: LG over-the-range microwaves detect cooktop heat and auto-start the fan to protect themselves. Rule that out before assuming a fault.

Working through the causes#
Touchpad membrane short (35%). When moisture works into the membrane switch layers it creates conductive paths that mimic a finger press, so the board acts on a key nobody touched. This is most common on over-the-range LG units exposed to constant cooktop steam. Dry the panel thoroughly; if phantom starts continue, the membrane is replaced. Stuck control-board relay (25%). If the relay that powers the magnetron or inverter circuit welds shut, the magnetron energizes the instant the microwave is plugged in, regardless of the keypad. This is the dangerous failure — the board is replaced because the relay is soldered to it. Control board logic fault (20%). The microcontroller can behave erratically from age, heat stress, or corrupted firmware, sending start commands with no input. The pattern is unpredictable rather than tied to steam or a neighboring appliance, and the board is replaced. Power-line interference (15%). LG Smart Inverter boards are more sensitive to line noise than a conventional transformer design, so surges from other equipment can trip a spurious start. A surge protector or line conditioner on the circuit usually settles it. Fan auto-start sensor fault (5% — over-the-range only). The cooktop temperature sensor that triggers the auto-fan can misread and start the fan with nothing cooking below. If only the fan activates, test that sensor rather than the cooking circuit.
