LG Dishwasher Motor Replacement — Inverter Direct Drive and the LE Error
LG dishwashers use Inverter Direct Drive technology — the wash motor mounts directly onto the pump assembly with no belt, no gearbox, and no coupling. This design reduces noise and mechanical wear, but it also means the motor assembly is a single integrated module. When LG's motor fails, you are replacing the entire motor-pump unit rather than swapping a belt or coupling like on conventional dishwashers.
The good news is that actual motor failure is rare on LG dishwashers. The LE (Locked Motor Error) code that brings most people to this page is more often caused by a $15 hall sensor failure than a $400 motor failure.
The Hall Sensor — Check This Before Buying a Motor
The Inverter Direct Drive motor uses a hall sensor (a small 3-wire component mounted on the stator) to report rotor position to the control board. When this sensor fails, the board cannot synchronize the inverter frequency with the rotor speed, triggering the LE error. The motor itself is fine — it just cannot receive the right electrical signals.
The hall sensor replacement costs $10-$20 and takes about 30 minutes. The motor assembly costs $150-$400. Always test the hall sensor before condemning the motor.
How to test: Disconnect the 3-wire hall sensor connector from the control board. With a multimeter, measure resistance between each pair of the three wires. All three readings should be similar (typically 5K-10K ohms). If one pair reads significantly different from the others, the sensor has failed.

Symptoms of Actual Motor Failure vs Hall Sensor Failure
Hall sensor failure (common, cheap fix):
- LE error code appears after the motor starts briefly, then stops
- Motor makes a brief humming sound before the error
- Error appears intermittently — sometimes the cycle runs fine
Actual motor failure (rare, expensive):
- Complete silence when the wash phase should start — no hum, no attempt to spin
- Grinding or scraping noise from the motor area
- Burning smell from the motor assembly
- Motor windings read open (infinite resistance) or shorted (near-zero ohms) on multimeter
- Visible damage to the stator windings when inspected

Tools Required
- Phillips #2 — for access panels and motor mounting
- 10mm socket — for motor mounting bolts
- Multimeter — essential for distinguishing hall sensor failure from motor failure
- Towels — disconnecting the motor-pump assembly releases residual water
- Channel-lock pliers — for hose clamps
Motor Replacement Steps
Disconnect power at the breaker. Shut off and disconnect the water supply — you will be working underneath the tub where water connections are.
Remove the bottom kick plate. The motor-pump assembly is mounted to the bottom of the tub. Disconnect the electrical harness (main motor connector and hall sensor connector). Release the hose clamps on the inlet and outlet hoses. Remove the mounting bolts (typically 3-4 bolts, 10mm). The assembly drops down.
Transfer any fittings or adapters from the old unit to the new one. Mount the new assembly, reconnect hoses and clamps, plug in both connectors. Reassemble and test with a Rinse Only cycle.

LG's Motor Warranty
LG provides a 10-year parts warranty on the Direct Drive motor in washers and dryers. For dishwashers, the motor is covered under the standard 1-year warranty only. However, some extended protection plans and LG's own extended warranty products cover the motor for longer. Check your documentation before paying out of pocket.
Lifespan and Prevention
The Inverter Direct Drive motor in LG dishwashers typically lasts the life of the machine (12-15+ years). Actual motor burnout is usually caused by a shorted heating element or a seized pump impeller forcing the motor to draw excessive current. Keeping the filter clean and the drain pump clear of debris protects the motor from overload conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
My LG dishwasher shows LE error. Do I need a new motor?
Probably not. The LE error is most commonly caused by a failed hall sensor ($10-$20), not the motor itself. Test the hall sensor resistance first. If the sensor tests good, then check for pump impeller jams before condemning the motor.
What is Inverter Direct Drive in an LG dishwasher?
It means the motor connects directly to the pump with no belt, gearbox, or coupling. Fewer moving parts, lower noise, and longer life. The downside is that when the motor does fail, you replace the entire motor-pump assembly as a unit.
Can I replace just the pump part of the LG motor-pump assembly?
On most LG dishwasher models, the motor and pump are integrated and sold as a single assembly. You cannot buy just the pump impeller or just the motor separately. The hall sensor is the one component that can be replaced independently.
