KitchenAid Gas Oven Igniter Glows But Will Not Light — Troubleshooting Guide
When a KitchenAid gas oven igniter glows orange but the gas never ignites, the igniter is almost certainly weak — drawing insufficient current to open the gas valve safety circuit. This is the most common gas oven repair across all brands, and KitchenAid (built on the Whirlpool platform) uses the same flat-style silicon carbide or silicon nitride igniter system as Whirlpool.
How the KitchenAid Gas Oven Ignition System Works
The gas oven ignition system is a safety-interlocked design:
- When you select Bake, the control board sends voltage to the igniter.
- The igniter heats up (glows orange/yellow within 30–60 seconds).
- As the igniter heats, its resistance drops, allowing more current to flow through the series circuit.
- When current reaches approximately 3.2–3.6 amps (depending on valve type), the gas valve's bi-metal safety mechanism opens.
- Gas flows to the burner and is ignited by the hot igniter.
The key insight: The igniter and gas valve are wired in series. The gas valve does not open based on igniter temperature — it opens based on current flow through the circuit. A weak igniter can glow visibly (generating heat) but still not draw enough current to open the valve.

Weak Igniter — The #1 Cause (85% of Cases)
Why Igniters Weaken
Silicon carbide igniters (the older flat-style with an exposed element) degrade gradually. Each heating cycle causes micro-cracking in the element, increasing its resistance. Higher resistance means less current flows through the circuit, and eventually the current drops below the 3.2-amp threshold needed to open the gas valve.
A weak igniter may:
- Glow for 60+ seconds without gas igniting (normal startup is 30–45 seconds)
- Glow dimmer than when new (though this is hard to judge by eye)
- Work intermittently (ignites after several attempts as the igniter slowly warms to sufficient current draw)
Testing the Igniter
Method 1 — Amp draw (most accurate): With the oven set to Bake, use a clamp-on ammeter on one of the igniter wires (accessible behind the rear panel or at the gas valve connection). If the igniter draws less than 3.0 amps after 90 seconds of glow, it is too weak to open the valve.
Method 2 — Timing: Time from when you see the igniter glow to when gas ignites. New igniter: 30–45 seconds. If it takes more than 90 seconds, or never ignites, the igniter is weak.
Method 3 — Ohm measurement (less reliable): Measure igniter resistance cold (room temperature). A new igniter reads 40–400 ohms depending on type. Very high resistance (1000+ ohms) confirms a failed igniter. However, many igniters test "normal" cold but fail to draw sufficient current when hot — amp draw is the definitive test.
KitchenAid Igniter Part Numbers
KitchenAid gas ranges and wall ovens use Whirlpool-platform igniters:
- Standard flat igniter (most common): Whirlpool W10918546 or model-specific
- Round/Norton-style (older models): Whirlpool 4342528
- Silicon nitride (newer high-efficiency models): Model-specific — runs hotter and starts faster
Parts Cost: $20–$60 (igniter) Professional Repair Cost: $120–$250
Replacement Procedure
- Turn off the gas supply to the range (valve behind the unit or at the meter).
- Unplug the range from the 120V outlet.
- Remove the oven racks and oven bottom panel.
- Locate the igniter next to the oven burner tube (flat element sitting in a bracket).
- Disconnect the wire connector (usually a 2-pin molex behind the rear panel).
- Remove the 2 mounting screws.
- Install the new igniter — handle with care, do not touch the element with bare hands (oils from skin create hot spots that shorten igniter life).
- Reconnect, reassemble, turn on gas, and test.
Gas Valve Failure — Rare But Possible (10% of Cases)
If the igniter is confirmed good (draws 3.2+ amps) and the gas still does not flow, the gas valve safety mechanism has failed. This is uncommon because the gas valve is a robust mechanical/bimetallic device, but it can fail after 15+ years.
Parts Cost: $100–$200 (gas valve assembly) Professional Repair Cost: $200–$350
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas ovens involve live gas lines — a loose connection creates explosion and carbon monoxide risk. Electric ovens run on 240V circuits. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Control Board Not Sending Voltage (5% of Cases)
If the igniter does not glow at all, the control board may not be sending voltage to the igniter circuit. This is a different problem from "glows but won't light." Check for 120V at the igniter connector with the oven set to Bake. No voltage = board or wiring issue.

Safety Notes
- Never bypass the gas valve safety circuit. The series-wired igniter/valve design exists to prevent unburned gas release.
- Do not use the oven if you smell gas — if gas is flowing without igniting, turn off the gas supply immediately and ventilate.
- Handle igniters carefully — silicon carbide is extremely brittle and cracks with even minor impact. Do not drop or bump during installation.

KitchenAid vs Whirlpool — Same Repair
This repair is identical on KitchenAid and Whirlpool gas ovens. The igniter, valve, and control system are the same platform. KitchenAid-branded replacement igniters cost 30–50% more than the equivalent Whirlpool part number — cross-reference before ordering.
