Kenmore Washer LE Error: Motor Locked or Overloaded
Quick Fix Attempt
The LE error on a Kenmore washer means the motor is unable to rotate the drum normally. Before diagnosing internal failures, try this sequence that resolves LE in roughly 40% of cases:
Step 1: Reduce the load. LE frequently triggers from overloading. If you stuffed the drum full, open the door and remove about a third of the contents. Redistribute the remaining items evenly around the drum perimeter. Restart the cycle.
Step 2: Power reset. Unplug the washer for 10 full minutes (not 2, not 5 — a full 10 minutes). This extended reset allows the motor control board's thermal protection circuits to fully cool and reset. On LG-built models specifically, the Hall sensor can lock in a false-error state that only clears with a prolonged power absence. Replug and start a cycle.
Step 3: Check for mechanical binding. With the machine off and door open, try rotating the drum by hand. It should turn smoothly with moderate effort (front-loaders have more resistance due to the belt). If the drum will not rotate at all, or makes grinding/scraping sounds when turned, skip to the mechanical binding section below — no amount of electrical reset will fix a physically jammed drum.
If these three steps resolved LE, monitor for 48 hours. If it does not recur, the cause was a transient overload or thermal event and no repair is needed.

If Still Showing LE: Which Kenmore Do You Have?
This is critical for LE specifically because it is a code used by both LG and Whirlpool — but with different causes and different diagnostic paths:
796.xxxxx (LG-built Kenmore Elite): LE on LG platforms means the rotor sensor detected the motor attempting to start but unable to achieve rotation. The most frequent cause on LG direct-drive motors is a failed Hall sensor (the magnetic position sensor in the stator that tells the inverter where the rotor magnets are, enabling proper commutation). Without accurate position data, the inverter cannot sequence the motor coils correctly and the motor stalls.
110.xxxxx (Whirlpool-built): Whirlpool platforms technically do not use "LE" as a standard code — but some Kenmore models with LG-derived control platforms (hybrid builds from the transition period) may display it. On Whirlpool-built units, the equivalent is F7 (motor speed error) or "Ld" (motor overload). If your 110-series shows "LE" check whether it might actually be reading "LE" as "Le" (lowercase e) which is a different code on some platforms.
Check your model prefix on the sticker inside the door frame to determine which diagnostic path applies.
LG-Built (796.xxxxx): Detailed Diagnosis
Hall Sensor Failure (Most Common LE Cause)
The LG direct-drive motor uses a stator bolted directly to the back of the outer tub, with the rotor (containing permanent magnets) spinning around it. Inside the stator, a small PCB contains Hall effect sensors that detect rotor magnet positions. These position signals are absolutely essential — without them, the inverter board cannot synchronize its power delivery to the correct coil at the correct moment.
Symptoms confirming Hall sensor failure:
- LE appears within seconds of cycle start (before drum achieves any speed)
- Machine worked fine yesterday, failed today with no warning (Hall sensors fail suddenly)
- Drum turns freely by hand (eliminating mechanical binding)
Testing:
Unplug washer. Pull machine from wall. Remove the rear access panel (6-8 screws). The motor stator is the large flat component mounted to the back of the tub. The rotor (the outer ring with magnets) must be removed first — one center bolt holds it. Pull the rotor straight back off the stator shaft.
The Hall sensor is a small circuit board mounted on the stator (usually with 3 small screws). It has a 5-wire connector running to the main board. Disconnect this connector.
Resistance test: Measure across the Hall sensor connector pins (consult LG tech sheet for pin assignments). Each Hall element should read approximately 5K-15K ohms. An open (OL) or shorted (near zero) reading on any element confirms failure.
Replacement Hall sensor/RPS for LG-built Kenmore: 6501KW2002A or equivalent. Cost: $30-$55. Installation: remove three mounting screws, swap board, reconnect.
Stator Coil Damage
Less commonly, LE results from a damaged stator coil (one of the electromagnetic windings that drive the rotor). A shorted coil causes the inverter to overdraw on that phase, triggering protective shutdown with LE.
Testing: Measure resistance across each stator coil pair. All should be within 1 ohm of each other (typically 6-12 ohms per phase). A coil reading significantly lower (or zero) than the others is shorted. A reading of OL is an open coil. Either means stator replacement ($80-$150).
Inverter Board (Main PCB)
If the Hall sensor and stator both test normal, the main PCB's motor driver section has failed. On LG platforms, the driver uses IGBT power transistors to switch high current to the stator coils. These transistors fail from heat stress, especially if the motor has been stalling repeatedly (each stall event dumps maximum current through the IGBTs).
Main board for LG-built Kenmore: $150-$250.

Whirlpool-Built (110.xxxxx): If Your Unit Shows LE
Verify the display is not actually showing "Ld" (long drain) or "F7" (motor speed). If it genuinely shows LE:
- Motor coupling broken (direct-drive models): $8-$15, easiest repair
- Transmission failure (seizure): $200-$400, often not worth repairing on older units
- Drive belt issues (belt-drive models): $15-$30
- MCU (motor control unit) failure: $150-$280
Professional Assessment Guidance
Call a professional if:
- The drum does not spin freely by hand (indicates mechanical failure requiring disassembly)
- You confirmed the Hall sensor is good but LE persists (narrows to stator or board — expensive parts that should not be ordered without definitive diagnosis)
- The machine is under warranty (LG warranties on direct-drive motors are sometimes 10 years)
LG warranty note: Many LG-built Kenmore Elite washers have a 10-year warranty on the direct-drive motor and associated components (Hall sensor, stator, rotor). Check your purchase date — if under 10 years, LG covers the motor parts and you pay only labor. Call LG directly with your Kenmore model number to verify coverage.

Important Note About Kenmore Parts Ordering
Because Kenmore is a multi-manufacturer brand (not a maker itself), parts must be ordered by the actual manufacturer's part number — not by searching "Kenmore washer parts." Your model number prefix identifies the real manufacturer:
For washers: the most common Kenmore washer manufacturer is Whirlpool (prefix 110.xxxxx for washers/dryers, 665.xxxxx for dishwashers, 790.xxxxx for ovens). Parts websites like PartSelect and RepairClinic accept your full Kenmore model number and automatically cross-reference to the correct OEM part number. Always verify the part number matches before ordering — similar-looking parts from different manufacturers are not interchangeable even though both machines say "Kenmore" on the exterior.
The Sears Parts Direct website (now Partstown) also stocks these parts but typically at a higher price point than ordering the OEM part directly from an appliance parts wholesaler. Shopping by the OEM part number rather than the Kenmore part number often saves 20-40% on identical components.

Extending Your Kenmore Washer's Lifespan
Regular maintenance prevents many error codes from developing in the first place. For your Kenmore washer, the most impactful maintenance items are:
Monthly: Run a clean cycle (dedicated Clean Washer cycle or hottest cycle with no clothes and a washer cleaner tablet). This dissolves detergent residue and mineral deposits that accumulate in the wash system, drain path, and sensor areas. Residue buildup causes false sensor readings, slow drainage, and reduced cleaning effectiveness.
Every 3-6 months: Clean the inlet screens where supply hoses connect. Hard water areas should clean every 3 months; soft water areas every 6. Also clean the drain pump filter if your model has an accessible one.
Annually: Inspect supply hoses for bulging, cracking, or discoloration. Rubber hoses should be replaced every 5 years regardless of appearance — internal deterioration is invisible until the hose bursts. Upgrade to stainless steel braided hoses for burst protection.
Always: Use the correct amount of HE detergent (if applicable). Check pockets before every load. Do not overload the drum past 3/4 capacity. Leave the door ajar between loads to prevent mold and mildew in the gasket and tub.
