GE Washer E8: Motor Drawing Excessive Current or Inverter Not Responding
E8 on GE washers signals the motor control system detected overcurrent or lost communication with the motor inverter. The interpretation depends on the washer type — front-load and inverter-drive top-loads have different E8 triggers.
Front-Load E8: Usually Overcurrent
The inverter board measured motor current above the safe maximum. The motor is working too hard due to:
Mechanical overload: Too many heavy items. Speed Queen-grade loads do not belong in a GE washer. Reduce and retry.
Drum bearing failure: Spin the drum by hand (unplugged, empty). Should rotate smoothly. Grinding or heavy resistance = bearing wear. This is a major repair ($250-$450 parts).
Foreign object: Coins, underwire, or small garments wedged between the inner drum and outer tub create friction. Listen for scraping during spin.

Top-Load Inverter E8: May Be Communication
The board may not distinguish between overcurrent and communication loss. Check the motor harness connector for corrosion or looseness before assuming mechanical overload.
Belt-Drive Models
Older GE top-loads with belt drives can show E8 from a worn belt creating excessive friction. Check the belt for cracks, glazing, or improper tension.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Diagnosis Steps
- Reduce load size, retry. If E8 clears = overloading
- Spin empty drum by hand. Grinding = bearing. Scraping = foreign object
- Check motor wiring connections for corrosion
- Test motor winding: 3-8 ohms between each pair of three phase wires (brushless motors)

Replacement Threshold
Bearing failure on a GE washer over 7 years old: repair cost ($400-$650) approaches 50-60% of a new machine. For older machines, replacement is often the better investment.
