Kenmore Dishwasher Will Not Start — Systematic Diagnosis Across OEM Platforms
A Kenmore dishwasher that refuses to start can present as completely dead (no lights, no sound) or as responsive but non-functional (lights on, buttons work, but pressing Start does nothing). The diagnosis path differs between these two presentations, and within each, the specific repair depends on your manufacturing platform. Because Kenmore dishwashers are built by Whirlpool, LG, Frigidaire, and formerly Bosch, the electrical architecture, safety interlock chain, and startup sequence vary between models bearing the same Kenmore name.
Completely Dead — No Lights, No Sounds
When there is zero response from the dishwasher — no display, no indicator lights, no beep when pressing buttons — the issue is in the power delivery chain before it reaches the control board.
1. Check Power Supply (All Platforms — Start Here)
Before touching the dishwasher:
- Circuit breaker: Toggle the dishwasher breaker OFF then firmly ON. Some breakers trip to a middle position that appears ON but delivers no power.
- GFCI outlet: If the dishwasher shares a GFCI-protected circuit (common in kitchens), press the Reset button on the GFCI outlet. A tripped GFCI kills power to all devices on that circuit.
- Direct-wired check: Most Kenmore dishwashers are hardwired (no plug). The junction box is behind the kick panel. Remove the kick panel and open the junction box — verify wire nuts are secure and no wires have disconnected.
2. Thermal Fuse (All Platforms — 25% of no-start cases)
Every Kenmore dishwasher has a thermal fuse that permanently cuts power if internal temperature exceeds safe limits. A blown thermal fuse produces the same symptom as a tripped breaker — completely dead unit — but the breaker itself is fine.
Whirlpool 665 location: On the control board bracket inside the door panel, or near the element leads under the tub. LG 630 location: Attached to the tub near the heater leads, accessible by removing the kick panel. Frigidaire 587 location: On the control housing inside the door.
Test: Disconnect power. Locate the thermal fuse. Disconnect one lead and test for continuity with a multimeter. No continuity = blown fuse. Replace the fuse ($8–$25) BUT investigate the root cause of the overheating.
3. Door Latch/Switch (All Platforms — 20% of no-start cases)
All Kenmore dishwashers require the door switch to be closed before the control board will power up the main systems. On some models, a failed door switch produces a completely dark display (not just failure to start a cycle).
Whirlpool 665: The door latch contains a microswitch. Test with a multimeter — switch should show continuity when the latch is in the closed position. LG 630: Uses a magnetic reed switch. Test by closing the door and checking for continuity at the switch terminals (accessible from the door panel or from below).
4. Control Board Failure (All Platforms — 15% of no-start cases)
If power reaches the control board (verified with voltage tester at the board's main connector) but the board produces no output — no display, no relay clicks, no response — the board itself has failed.
Whirlpool 665 boards: Separate main board and UI board. Either can fail. If the main board powers the UI but the UI is dark, the UI board specifically failed. LG 630 boards: Single integrated board. All functions die simultaneously when it fails.
Parts Cost: $95–$280 depending on platform and model Professional Repair Cost: $220–$440

Lights On But Will Not Start a Cycle
When the display or indicator lights work but pressing Start has no effect, the control board is powered but the startup interlock chain is not satisfied.
1. Door Latch Not Fully Engaged (Most Common — 35% of cases)
The door may appear closed but the latch microswitch (665) or reed switch (630) is not making contact. This is different from a completely dead unit because the board has power but the safety interlock prevents cycle initiation.
Whirlpool 665: Push the door firmly until you hear a distinct click. If no click, the latch hook may be worn or the strike plate misaligned. LG 630: The magnetic reed switch requires precise alignment. If the door hinge has sagged slightly (nylon cables stretched), the magnet no longer aligns with the reed switch. The display may work (powered by the board regardless of door position) but the cycle cannot start.
DIY Difficulty: Easy Parts Cost: $18–$45 Professional Repair Cost: $100–$190
2. Control Lock / Child Lock Activated (All Platforms — 20% of cases)
All Kenmore platforms include a control lock feature that disables all buttons except the lock toggle itself. If activated accidentally, every button press is ignored — the display may show a lock icon or the Lock indicator LED is illuminated.
Whirlpool 665: Hold the Lock or Control Lock button for 3 seconds to toggle. LG 630: Hold the Child Lock button (or button combination like Rinse + Spray) for 3 seconds. Frigidaire 587: Hold the Delay Start button for 3 seconds.
3. Previous Cycle Not Cleared (Whirlpool 665 Platform — 15% of cases)
On Whirlpool-platform Kenmore dishwashers, the "Clean" light staying illuminated means the previous cycle completed but the status has not been cleared. The board will not accept a new cycle start command until the Clean status is acknowledged.
Fix: Press Cancel once. The Clean light should extinguish. Now select a new cycle and press Start.
4. Delayed Start Accidentally Set (All Platforms — 10% of cases)
If you pressed Delay Start before pressing Start, the dishwasher accepted the cycle but is waiting for the delayed time to elapse. The display may show a countdown (digital models) or the Delay indicator LED is on.
Fix: Press Cancel to clear the delay, then re-select cycle and Start for immediate operation.
5. Water Supply Closed (All Platforms — Platform-Specific Behavior)
Some Kenmore models on the Whirlpool platform will not start AT ALL if the water inlet valve cannot detect supply pressure. Others will start but cancel within the first minute. LG-platform models typically start the cycle regardless and then display error IE when fill fails.
Hard Reset Procedure
When no specific cause is identified, a hard reset clears latched faults in the control board:
- Turn off the circuit breaker for the dishwasher.
- Wait 5 minutes (10 minutes for LG 630 platform — capacitors hold charge longer).
- Restore power.
- The board should return to its default idle state.
- Select a cycle and attempt to start.
If the hard reset resolves the issue but it recurs, an intermittent electrical connection (often the Kenmore harness adapter between boards) is the likely root cause.

Startup Sequence by Platform
Understanding what SHOULD happen when you press Start helps identify where the sequence fails:
Whirlpool 665:
- Start pressed → board checks door switch
- Board energizes door lock solenoid (audible click)
- Drain pump runs for 30 seconds (clears residual water)
- Inlet valve opens (audible hum)
- Water begins filling
LG 630:
- Start pressed → board checks door switch
- Board runs a brief drain sequence (20 seconds)
- Inlet valve opens
- Water fills while board monitors flow meter/float
If you can identify which step the sequence stops at (by listening for the clicks and hums), you know exactly which component has failed.
Kenmore-Specific: Post-Power-Surge No-Start
Kenmore dishwashers are particularly susceptible to power surge damage because the Kenmore adapter harness between the OEM board and the Kenmore UI creates an additional vulnerability point. A power surge that a standalone Whirlpool or LG dishwasher might survive can damage the adapter connector or the Kenmore UI board, producing a no-start condition even when the OEM main board is fine.
After a power surge: if the dishwasher is dead, check the thermal fuse first (surge → momentary overcurrent → heat → fuse blows). If the fuse is intact, examine the Kenmore harness adapter for melted pins or discoloration.
