Kenmore Dishwasher Will Not Dispense Detergent — Actuator Types by Platform
A detergent dispenser that refuses to open during the wash cycle means your dishes are running through hot water with no cleaning agent. On Kenmore dishwashers, the dispenser release mechanism varies by manufacturing platform, and the troubleshooting path depends on knowing whether you have a bi-metal actuator (Whirlpool 665), wax motor (LG 630), or solenoid (Frigidaire 587). The symptoms look identical from the outside — detergent pod sitting in the cup after the cycle — but the repair is platform-specific.
Dispenser Release Mechanisms
Whirlpool 665 Platform — Bi-Metal Actuator
The dispenser on Whirlpool-built Kenmore dishwashers releases via a bi-metal strip. When the control board sends current through this strip, it heats and bends, mechanically releasing the spring-loaded dispenser door. The bi-metal approach is simple and reliable but has one vulnerability: detergent residue can insulate the strip, reducing its effective bending and eventually preventing sufficient deflection to release the latch.
The entire dispenser assembly (cup, door, actuator, and housing) is integrated as a single replaceable unit on most 665 models. The assembly mounts inside the door panel with 2-4 screws.
LG 630 Platform — Wax Motor Actuator
LG-built Kenmore dishwashers use a wax motor — a sealed cylinder containing wax that expands when heated, pushing a rod that releases the dispenser latch. This mechanism provides more force than a bi-metal strip, reliably overcoming any resistance from dried detergent. However, when a wax motor fails, it fails completely — there is no gradual degradation. One cycle it works, the next it does not.
On LG-platform models, the wax motor is a separate component from the dispenser cup and can be replaced independently.
Frigidaire 587 Platform — Solenoid Actuator
Frigidaire-built Kenmore dishwashers use an electromagnetic solenoid that pulls a latch pin when energized. This is the fastest-acting mechanism (nearly instant release) but solenoid coils can burn open from repeated activation over years.

Quick Diagnosis
Is the Door Physically Blocked?
Before diagnosing the release mechanism, check the most common cause: something preventing the dispenser door from swinging open during the cycle.
- Load your dishwasher normally.
- Manually open the dispenser door through its full arc.
- If ANY dish, rack tine, or utensil contacts the door during its swing, THAT is your problem — rearrange the load.
This simple check resolves approximately 30% of "dispenser not opening" complaints across all platforms.
Is Detergent Residue Binding the Door?
Old detergent — particularly gel-type — leaves sticky residue on the door hinge and latch surface. Over many cycles, this buildup can physically bind the door shut.
Fix: Clean the dispenser cup, door hinge, and latch surface with hot water and a stiff brush. Pay special attention to the hinge pin area where gel detergent tends to accumulate.
Testing the Actuator
Whirlpool 665 Platform:
- Disconnect power. Remove inner door panel screws (Torx T20).
- Locate the dispenser connector (2-pin, usually blue or white).
- With a multimeter, measure resistance across the bi-metal strip terminals: should be 10-50 ohms.
- Infinite ohms = open (burned out). Replace the dispenser assembly.
- If resistance is correct, check for 120V at the connector during the cycle (advanced — requires running with panel open, professional recommended).
LG 630 Platform:
- Disconnect power. Remove inner door panel (Phillips screws).
- Locate the wax motor — small cylindrical component with 2-wire connector, separate from the dispenser cup.
- The wax motor is a thermal device and does not test reliably with a multimeter at room temperature. Best diagnosis: enter diagnostic mode and trigger the dispenser test function.
- If the wax motor does not activate in diagnostic mode, replace it.
DIY Difficulty: Moderate Parts Cost: $15–$45 (wax motor or dispenser assembly depending on platform) Professional Repair Cost: $120–$200
Actuator Replacement
Whirlpool 665 — Dispenser Assembly Replacement
- Disconnect power at the breaker.
- Open the door and remove inner door panel screws (typically 8 Torx T20).
- The dispenser assembly mounts on the inner door surface. Disconnect its 2-pin electrical connector.
- Remove the 2-4 mounting screws holding the assembly to the door.
- Transfer any reusable components (rinse aid cap, if separate) to the new assembly.
- Mount the new assembly, reconnect the connector, and reassemble the door panel.
- Test by running a short cycle with a detergent tab — verify the tab is gone after 15 minutes.
LG 630 — Wax Motor Replacement Only
- Disconnect power at the breaker.
- Remove inner door panel (Phillips screws).
- Locate the wax motor (small cylinder connected by a 2-pin harness and a mechanical linkage arm to the dispenser latch).
- Disconnect the electrical connector and detach the linkage arm from the latch pin.
- Remove the single mounting screw holding the wax motor bracket.
- Install the new motor, reconnect the linkage arm (ensure proper alignment with the latch pin), and reconnect the harness.
- Test in diagnostic mode before reassembling the door panel.
Safety First — Know the Risks

When the Control Board Is at Fault
If the actuator/motor tests good but never receives power during the cycle, the control board is not sending the signal. On Whirlpool 665 models, the dispenser relay on the board is one of the smaller relays and fails from contact oxidation. On LG 630 models, the wax motor drive circuit on the board can fail independently.
Verify by testing for voltage at the actuator connector during the cycle (approximately 10-15 minutes after wash starts). If no voltage reaches the connector but the board is otherwise functioning, the board needs replacement.

Alternative: External Detergent Application
If your dispenser is non-functional and you need to wash dishes while waiting for parts:
- Place a detergent pod in the bottom of the tub (not in the dispenser). It will dissolve during the pre-wash phase rather than the main wash, reducing cleaning effectiveness but providing some cleaning action.
- Use liquid detergent squeezed directly onto the door interior before closing — it distributes during the first spray rotation.
These are temporary workarounds, not permanent solutions. The dispenser times detergent release to the optimal cycle phase for a reason.

Parts Sourcing Tip
When ordering a Kenmore dispenser assembly, search your FULL model number (e.g., 665.13242K900) rather than just "Kenmore dishwasher dispenser." Kenmore produced dozens of 665-prefix models with different dispenser configurations. Using your full model number on PartSelect or RepairClinic ensures exact fit.
For the LG-platform wax motor, the part is often cheaper under the LG part number than the Kenmore cross-reference — they are identical components.
