How to Replace an LG Dishwasher Water Inlet Valve (Part 5220FR2006H)
The water inlet valve controls water flow into your LG dishwasher. When it fails, the dishwasher either will not fill (triggering the IE error code) or will not stop filling (causing overflow and the AE leak error). LG uses part number 5220FR2006H on most LDF and LDT series models. The valve sits behind the lower access panel on the left side and connects to your home water supply line. This is a straightforward intermediate repair that takes about 25-35 minutes.
The IE error code specifically means the dishwasher did not detect adequate water level within 8 minutes of opening the fill valve. Before replacing the valve, verify your home water supply is actually on — check the shutoff valve under the sink and confirm water pressure is adequate (turn on the kitchen faucet to verify). Also check the inlet screen for mineral blockage, which is free to fix.
Before You Start
- Tools needed: Phillips #2 screwdriver, 10mm wrench or adjustable wrench, channel-lock pliers, towels, small bucket, multimeter
- Parts needed: LG inlet valve 5220FR2006H (~$30-$60)
- Time required: 25-35 minutes
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Safety warning: Disconnect power at the circuit breaker AND close the water supply valve under the sink. Have towels ready — the supply line will drip when disconnected.

Diagnosing the Inlet Valve
Before ordering the replacement valve, narrow down the issue:
-
Check water supply: Open the sink faucet fully. If flow is weak, the problem is your home plumbing, not the valve.
-
Inspect the inlet screen: Close the supply valve. Use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the supply line from the valve inlet. Look inside the valve inlet port — there is a small mesh screen. If clogged with sediment, clean it with an old toothbrush under running water and reinstall. This alone fixes 40% of IE errors.
-
Test the valve electrically: Access the valve (see Step 3 below). With power connected and the dishwasher attempting to fill, test for 120V AC at the valve solenoid connector using a multimeter. If voltage is present but no water flows — the valve solenoid is stuck closed. If no voltage — the control board is not commanding the fill, which is a different problem.
-
Run Smart Diagnosis: LG ThinQ app will report whether the control board detected a fill timeout or a flow sensor issue.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Shut Off Water and Power
Close the water supply valve under the sink by turning clockwise. Disconnect power at the circuit breaker. Place towels on the floor beneath the dishwasher front. Open the dishwasher door to release any residual pressure, then close it.
Step 2: Disconnect the Water Supply Line
Using a 10mm wrench, loosen the brass compression fitting where the supply line connects to the inlet valve at the bottom-left of the dishwasher (accessible behind the lower access panel or from underneath). Have your bucket ready — some water will drain from the line. Pull the line free and set it aside.
Step 3: Remove the Lower Access Panel
Remove the 4 Phillips screws along the bottom front edge of the kick plate. Pull the panel forward and down. The inlet valve is now visible on the left side of the unit, mounted to the tub base with a bracket. It is a gray or black solenoid body with one water inlet (brass fitting from supply line), one water outlet (rubber hose going up into tub), and one electrical connector.
Step 4: Disconnect the Valve Wiring
Locate the electrical connector on the valve solenoid coil. It is a 2-pin plug. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the valve terminals. Photograph the orientation before removing.
Step 5: Remove the Outlet Hose
The valve outlet connects to a rubber fill hose that carries water up into the tub. This hose is secured with a spring clamp. Use channel-lock pliers to squeeze the clamp ears together and slide the clamp back along the hose. Pull the hose off the valve outlet nipple. A small amount of water will drain — this is normal.
Step 6: Remove the Valve Mounting Bracket
The valve is held to the dishwasher frame by a metal bracket secured with 1-2 Phillips screws. Remove these screws and slide the valve assembly free. On some models, the valve also has a ground wire attached to the bracket — note its position.
Step 7: Install the New Inlet Valve
Position the new 5220FR2006H valve in the mounting bracket with the inlet port pointing toward the supply line location and the outlet port pointing toward the fill hose. Secure with the bracket screws. Reconnect the fill hose to the outlet port and slide the spring clamp over the hose connection, releasing it into the grooved area. Reconnect the electrical connector — push until it clicks. Reconnect the water supply line to the inlet port and tighten the compression fitting with your 10mm wrench. Do not overtighten — brass fittings only need about a quarter-turn past hand-tight.
Step 8: Test for Leaks
Open the water supply valve slowly and watch the connections. Check the supply line fitting (brass compression) and the outlet hose clamp for any drips. Tighten if needed. Reinstall the lower access panel. Restore power at the breaker. Run a Quick Wash or Rinse cycle and verify the tub fills normally. The IE error should not return.

Troubleshooting After Replacement
- IE error persists with new valve: Verify the electrical connector is fully seated. If the valve still does not open, test for 120V at the connector during fill phase. No voltage means the control board or wiring is the issue, not the valve.
- Water fills but very slowly: Check that you did not overtighten the supply line compression fitting — this can crush the ferrule and restrict flow. Also clean the inlet screen inside the new valve before installing.
- AE error after installation: A connection is leaking. The base pan leak sensor requires only a tablespoon of water to trigger. Check the supply line fitting and the outlet hose clamp.
- Valve clicks but no water: The supply valve under the sink may not be fully open, or sediment already clogged the new valve screen during installation. Disconnect and check the screen.

When to Call a Professional
- Voltage is present at the valve connector but multiple new valves fail to open — likely a power supply issue delivering incorrect voltage
- You see water damage inside the base pan indicating a long-term slow leak that may have corroded wiring
- The IE error appears alongside other codes (HE, LE) simultaneously — this pattern suggests control board failure
- The water supply line fitting is corroded and the compression fitting will not seal properly — a plumber may be needed

FAQ
Q: What causes the IE error code on LG dishwashers? A: IE means the dishwasher did not reach proper water level within 8 minutes. Causes ranked by frequency: clogged inlet screen (clean for free), failed inlet valve solenoid (replace 5220FR2006H), closed supply valve, or low home water pressure. Always check the inlet screen first.
Q: Can I clean the inlet valve instead of replacing it? A: You can clean the inlet screen (mesh filter inside the valve port) which fixes many IE errors. However, the solenoid mechanism itself cannot be repaired — if the coil is burned out or the plunger is stuck, the entire valve must be replaced.
Q: Is the LG inlet valve part the same as the washing machine valve? A: No. While LG shares the drain pump (4681EA2001T) between dishwashers and washers, the inlet valves are different. The dishwasher uses 5220FR2006H (single solenoid), while LG washers use multi-port valves with different form factors.
Q: How long does an LG inlet valve typically last? A: The average lifespan is 6-10 years. Hard water areas see shorter life due to mineral buildup on the solenoid plunger. Installing a sediment filter on your supply line can extend valve life significantly.
