Hotpoint Oven F7: Specific Function Key Stuck
How F7 Differs From F0
Your Hotpoint oven displays F7 and the control panel beeps or behaves erratically. On the GE/Hotpoint oven platform, F7 means a specific function key — one of the cycle-selection or feature buttons — is registering as continuously pressed. This is a stuck-key code similar to F0, but with an important distinction:
- F0 on older models = any stuck key (general scan failure)
- F7 = a specific function key identified by the board's scan matrix (the board knows which key position is stuck)
This distinction helps diagnosis because the failing section of the touchpad membrane is localized to the stuck key's physical location.

The Touchpad Membrane
Hotpoint ovens use a flat membrane touchpad overlay bonded to the front control panel. Behind the printed button graphics, each button position has two conductive traces on a flexible circuit board. Pressing a button compresses the membrane layers, bringing the traces into contact and signaling the ERC board.
F7 posts when the traces for a particular function key are in continuous contact without physical pressure being applied. The board's scan matrix detects the closed circuit and, after confirming it persists beyond the debounce period (typically 30-60 seconds), posts F7.
Common Causes of Stuck Function Keys
Moisture Behind the Membrane
Kitchen steam — from boiling pots, open dishwasher steam vents, or even normal cooking moisture — migrates behind the membrane seal over years. Moisture is electrically conductive and can bridge the gap between traces at a button position, creating a phantom "press."
Hotpoint ovens are commonly installed in smaller kitchens where the range is close to other steam sources. The budget-tier membrane sealing on Hotpoint touchpads may allow moisture intrusion earlier than premium GE models with more robust edge sealing.
Temporary fix: Disconnect power for 24-48 hours to allow moisture to evaporate. If F7 clears after the extended power-off period, moisture was the cause. Apply a thin bead of clear silicone sealant around the membrane edges to slow future moisture intrusion. This buys time but is not a permanent solution — a new membrane overlay is the proper fix.
Membrane Delamination
The touchpad overlay is a multi-layer construction: decorative printed layer, adhesive, conductive trace layers, spacer layer, and backing adhesive. As the adhesive ages from heat exposure, layers can separate (delaminate). Delamination at the function key area allows the trace layers to drift into contact.
You may notice the membrane surface feels loose, bubbly, or raised around the stuck key position. Press firmly on adjacent areas — if F7 temporarily clears when you press a different part of the membrane, the traces are flexing in and out of contact due to delamination.
Corrosion on Ribbon Cable
The flexible ribbon cable connecting the touchpad to the ERC board can develop corrosion on its contacts — especially at the connector end where it plugs into the board. Corrosion creates random low-resistance paths that the board may interpret as stuck keys.
Unplug the ribbon cable, inspect both the cable contacts and the board socket for green or white corrosion, clean with isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush, and re-seat firmly.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas ovens involve live gas lines — a loose connection creates explosion and carbon monoxide risk. Electric ovens run on 240V circuits. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

The Isolation Test for F7
- Disconnect power at the breaker
- Access the rear of the control panel (remove screws)
- Unplug the touchpad ribbon cable from the ERC board
- Restore power
F7 clears: The touchpad membrane is the fault. Order a replacement overlay ($30-$65 for Hotpoint models). The overlay peels off and the new one adheres in its place.
F7 persists: The ERC board's key scanning circuit has an internal fault. Board replacement: $120-$200.
Replacing the Touchpad Overlay
Hotpoint touchpad overlays are typically peel-and-stick type:
- Power off at breaker
- Remove the control panel back cover
- Unplug the ribbon cable from the ERC board
- From the front, carefully peel the old overlay off the panel (use a plastic scraper, not metal, to avoid scratching the panel surface)
- Clean adhesive residue from the panel surface with rubbing alcohol
- Align the new overlay, peel the backing, and press firmly into place starting from one edge to avoid air bubbles
- Route the ribbon cable and plug it into the ERC board
- Replace the back cover and restore power

Why F7 Is More Specific Than F0
On GE-platform Hotpoint ovens, the ERC board scans the touchpad button matrix by energizing rows sequentially and reading column responses. F0 indicates the board detected a stuck condition during the general scan sequence but could not isolate which specific key position was affected. F7 indicates the board successfully identified the specific row/column intersection of the stuck key — it knows exactly which function key is shorted.
This specificity means you can narrow the membrane failure to a physical area. If the "bake" button is the identified stuck key, moisture or delamination is concentrated in the bake button region of the membrane. This can help when deciding between full overlay replacement and targeted membrane repair.

Questions About Hotpoint F7
Can I clear F7 by pressing the stuck button repeatedly? Sometimes — if the stuck condition is marginal (moisture bridge that is barely conductive), physically pressing and releasing the button may break the moisture bridge temporarily. If F7 clears after button manipulation, moisture is confirmed as the cause.
F7 shows different function key positions at different times. What does that mean? Multiple stuck keys suggest widespread moisture intrusion or membrane delamination affecting multiple button positions. The entire overlay needs replacement rather than targeting a single key area.
My Hotpoint oven works fine between F7 episodes. Should I worry? Intermittent F7 means the membrane is degrading gradually. Each episode will become more frequent as moisture accumulates or delamination spreads. Plan for overlay replacement rather than waiting for permanent failure.
