GE Oven Noisy — Convection Fan, Element, and Cooling Fan Sounds
GE ovens — particularly Profile and Cafe models with convection systems — have several moving parts that can produce noise as they age. Understanding which sounds are concerning and which are normal operation saves unnecessary service calls while catching genuine problems early.
GE Oven Fan Systems
Modern GE ovens have up to three separate fans:
- Convection fan (inside the oven cavity, behind rear panel): Runs during Convection Bake, Air Fry, True European Convection modes. Present on Profile (PT, JT5000) and Cafe (CT9070) models.
- Cooling fan (behind the control panel): Runs during and after ALL cooking to protect electronics from heat. Continues running 15-30 minutes after the oven is turned off.
- In-oven camera cooling fan (Profile/Cafe with camera): Very small fan that keeps the camera lens cool during operation.
Any of these fans can develop noise as bearings wear.

Common GE Oven Noises
Grinding During Convection — Fan Motor Bearings
The convection fan motor (WB26T10044 for Profile, WB26T10030 for Cafe) operates in a 350-500F environment for hours at a time. The high-temperature grease in its bearings degrades over 3-7 years, producing grinding or scraping. This is the most common oven noise complaint on GE convection models.
Test: Run the oven in standard Bake (no convection) — if noise is absent, the convection fan is confirmed as the source. Then switch to Convection Bake — noise returns.

Whirring After Oven Turns Off — Cooling Fan
The cooling fan runs after cooking ends to bring down control panel temperature. This is NORMAL and expected. It stops automatically after 15-30 minutes. If the cooling fan becomes loud (bearing wear) or runs indefinitely (thermostat fault), that requires attention.
A cooling fan that runs for more than 45 minutes after the oven is off may indicate a failed cooling thermostat (sticking in the on position) — not dangerous, but annoying and wears the fan motor.
Parts Cost: $25-60 | Professional Repair Cost: $100-180
Clicking Every Few Minutes — Temperature Cycling
GE oven control boards cycle the heating element on and off to maintain temperature. Each on/off cycle produces a relay click from the board. This is normal. The frequency depends on oven load and insulation condition — typically every 2-5 minutes.
If the clicking becomes rapid (every 30 seconds or less), the temperature sensor may be causing the board to short-cycle. Check sensor resistance.
Loud Pop or Bang — Metal Expansion
Oven cavity walls, elements, and panels expand when heating and contract when cooling. A single loud pop during preheat or cool-down is normal thermal expansion. Multiple or very loud bangs may indicate a delaminating oven liner (the porcelain enamel separating from the steel — especially common after aggressive self-clean use).
Rattling at Specific Temperature — Resonance
Convection fans can create vibration at specific RPMs that resonate with loose components. This manifests as a rattle that appears only at certain temperatures (because the fan speed varies slightly with load and temperature). Check:
- Storage drawer runners below the oven
- Rear access panel screws
- Oven racks not fully seated on rack supports
- Broil pan or pizza stone left inside
Buzzing from Control Panel — Relay Chattering
A control board relay with worn contacts may buzz or chatter rather than clicking cleanly. This 60Hz buzz is audible from the front of the oven (control panel area) and indicates the relay is nearing failure. If accompanied by intermittent heating, the board needs replacement.
Parts Cost: $100-300 (ERC board) | Professional Repair Cost: $220-480
