Frigidaire Refrigerator H1: High Temperature Alarm
Act Quickly for Food Safety
H1 means the freezer temperature has risen above 26F (or the threshold set by the board), significantly above the typical 0F setpoint. At 26F, frozen food begins to thaw. The USDA considers food above 40F for two or more hours unsafe.

What to Check First
1. Is the compressor running? Put your hand on the side of the refrigerator near the bottom. A running compressor vibrates and warms the cabinet exterior. If the sides are room temperature and silent, the compressor is not running.
2. Are the condenser coils clean? On Frigidaire refrigerators, the condenser coils are either on the back (older models) or underneath (newer models, accessed by removing the front grille). Coils caked with dust and pet hair cannot dissipate heat, causing the compressor to overheat and shut down on its internal overload protector.
3. Is the evaporator fan running? Open the freezer door. You should hear a fan running (it stops briefly when the door opens on some models, then restarts). If no fan sound with the compressor running, see 5Y EF diagnosis.
4. Is the door sealed? A door not closing fully (item protruding, sagging hinge, torn gasket) lets warm air in continuously.
5. Was there a power outage? After an extended outage, H1 triggers when the refrigerator regains power and measures the elevated temperature. If this is the case, H1 will clear on its own as the unit cools back down.
Common Root Causes
| Cause | Fix | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Power outage (temperature rose during outage) | Wait for cooling | $0 |
| Dirty condenser coils | Clean with brush/vacuum | $0 |
| Failed evaporator fan | Replace fan motor | $120-$180 |
| Defrost failure (ice blocking airflow) | Defrost repair | $90-$180 |
| Sealed system failure (compressor, refrigerant leak) | Sealed system repair | $400-$800 |
| Door gasket failure | Replace gasket | $60-$120 |
Safety First — Know the Risks
Refrigerant (R-134a/R-600a) requires EPA certification to handle. Improper discharge is a federal violation and health hazard. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Clearing H1
H1 clears automatically when the freezer temperature drops back below the alarm threshold. If the root cause is fixed and the compressor runs, the freezer should reach setpoint within 4-8 hours. Press the alarm reset button on some models to silence the audible alarm while cooling occurs.

When to Call a Professional
If condenser coils are clean, the fan runs, doors seal properly, and the compressor is running but the freezer still does not cool, the sealed system (compressor, condenser, evaporator, refrigerant charge) has a problem. Sealed system repairs require EPA-certified technicians and specialized equipment.
The Real Cost of DIY

FAQ
Is my frozen food safe? Check temperatures. Below 40F is safe. 40-50F for under two hours is marginal. Above 40F for over two hours -- discard perishables per USDA guidelines.
H1 appeared with no power outage. Should I worry? Yes. Without an outage explanation, H1 indicates a cooling system failure that needs prompt diagnosis.
Can I reset H1 without fixing anything? H1 resets automatically when temperature drops. But if the underlying cause is not fixed, it will recur.
Frigidaire refrigerator running warm? H1 needs prompt diagnosis to protect your food. Book today.
