Frigidaire Refrigerator Gasket Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
Frigidaire refrigerators use a magnetic door gasket — a flexible rubber strip with embedded magnets that wraps around the door perimeter. The magnets pull the gasket against the metal door frame, creating an airtight seal. The gasket is retained in a channel on the door liner and can be replaced without removing the door.
Door Gasket vs. Crisper Drawer Seal
Frigidaire has a proprietary crisper drawer seal — a separate rubber gasket around the crisper cover that maintains humidity inside the crisper drawers. If vegetables are wilting faster than expected, check the crisper seal first, not the door gasket. The crisper seal is a smaller, less expensive part ($5–$15) that slides into a groove on the crisper cover.
The door gasket affects overall temperature and energy efficiency. The crisper seal affects produce humidity. They are different components, different symptoms, different fixes.

Symptoms of Door Gasket Failure
- Condensation or frost on the inside walls — warm humid air is leaking past the gasket and condensing on cold interior surfaces
- Refrigerator runs constantly — the compressor works overtime to compensate for air leakage. Energy bills increase
- Visible gaps between gasket and door frame — close the door and look for light shining through gaps. Use a flashlight inside and observe from outside in a dark room
- Gasket is torn, cracked, or warped — physical damage from age, cleaning chemicals, or door overloading (heavy items on door shelves pulling the door open slightly)
- Dollar bill test fails — close a dollar bill in the door. Pull it out. If it slides out with no resistance, the gasket is not sealing at that point. Test all four sides
Gasket Cost
| Component | Cost |
|---|---|
| OEM door gasket (single door) | $40–$80 |
| OEM gasket (French door — 2 needed) | $35–$65 each |
| Crisper drawer seal | $5–$15 |
| Electrolux cross-reference | same range |
| Aftermarket | $20–$50 |
| Professional labor | $80–$140 |
| DIY total | $20–$80 |
| Professional total | $100–$250 |
French door models require two gaskets. Order both if one is failing — the other is typically similar age.

Replacement Procedure
- No need to unplug — gasket replacement does not involve electrical work.
- Open the door. Starting at the top corner, pull the old gasket out of the retention channel. Work around the entire perimeter. The gasket may be held by screws or a friction-fit channel (model-dependent).
- If screw-retained: loosen (do not fully remove) the door liner screws behind the gasket. This loosens the door liner enough to slide the old gasket out and the new one in.
- Soak the new gasket in warm water for 10 minutes to soften it and remove shipping creases.
- Start at the top center of the door. Press the new gasket's retention profile into the channel (or behind the loosened door liner). Work outward to each corner, then down both sides, ending at the bottom center.
- For screw-retained gaskets: retighten the door liner screws snugly (do not overtighten — the liner can crack).
- Close the door and check the seal all around. The gasket should compress evenly against the door frame with no gaps.
- Dollar bill test all four sides to verify seal quality.
Tools: Phillips #2 (if screw-retained), warm water for soaking. Time: 20–35 minutes.

Gasket Maintenance (Extend Lifespan)
- Clean the gasket monthly with warm water and mild soap. Avoid bleach, abrasive cleaners, or petroleum-based products — they degrade the rubber
- Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the gasket surface every 6 months — this keeps the rubber supple and improves the seal
- Do not overload door shelves — excessive weight pulls the door open slightly, stretching the gasket over time
- Verify the refrigerator is level — a tilted unit causes uneven gasket compression

FAQ
How do I test my Frigidaire refrigerator door gasket?
Dollar bill test: close a bill in the door, try to pull it out. No resistance = failed gasket at that point. Test all four sides.
Why are my vegetables wilting in my Frigidaire refrigerator?
Check the crisper drawer seal first — a separate rubber gasket on the crisper cover ($5-$15). The door gasket affects temperature, not crisper humidity.
Does a bad gasket increase energy bills?
Yes. Air leakage forces the compressor to run longer. A failed gasket can increase energy consumption by 10-25%.
Can I clean instead of replacing a gasket that does not seal?
Sometimes. Clean the gasket and door frame to remove debris. Apply petroleum jelly. If the gasket is physically cracked, torn, or permanently deformed, replacement is needed.
