Maytag Refrigerator C1: Freezer Compartment Temperature Sensor Fault
C1 means the main control board detected an out-of-range reading from the freezer compartment NTC thermistor. This sensor monitors freezer temperature and tells the board when to cycle the compressor on and off. Without accurate temperature data, the board cannot maintain the target 0 degrees F in the freezer.
How the Freezer Thermistor Works
The NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistor is a small bead sensor mounted inside the freezer compartment, typically clipped to the evaporator cover or the ceiling panel. Its resistance changes predictably with temperature:
| Temperature | Expected Resistance |
|---|---|
| 0 degrees F | ~16,000 ohms |
| 32 degrees F | ~9,500 ohms |
| 70 degrees F (room temp) | ~5,000 ohms |
The board reads this resistance via a voltage divider circuit and converts it to a temperature value. C1 triggers when the reading falls outside the programmed range (approximately 500-40,000 ohms) or when the reading does not change over a 24-hour period (sensor stuck at one value).

Food Safety First
When C1 appears, check your freezer temperature immediately with a separate thermometer:
- Below 0 degrees F: Food is safe. The sensor failure has not yet affected cooling.
- 0-32 degrees F: Food is beginning to thaw. Consume or cook perishable items within 24 hours.
- Above 32 degrees F for more than 2 hours: Discard perishable items per FDA guidelines.
Diagnosis
1. Access the Thermistor
Open the freezer. Remove the evaporator cover (rear wall panel inside the freezer, held by 2-4 screws). The thermistor is a small sensor with a two-wire connector, clipped to the cover or suspended near the evaporator coils.
2. Measure Resistance
Disconnect the thermistor from its wire connector. Set your multimeter to the 20K ohm range. At room temperature (70 degrees F), the reading should be approximately 5,000 ohms. Place the sensor in a glass of ice water — the reading should climb to approximately 16,000 ohms.
3. Evaluate Results
- Normal readings at both temperatures: Thermistor is good. Check the wiring harness from the thermistor connector to the main board for breaks or corrosion. Also check for a defective main board analog input.
- Fixed reading that does not change: Sensor is stuck — replace.
- Infinite/OL: Open circuit — replace.
- Near 0 ohms: Shorted — replace.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Refrigerant (R-134a/R-600a) requires EPA certification to handle. Improper discharge is a federal violation and health hazard. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Replacement
Part: Freezer thermistor WPW10384183, $12-22.
- Unplug refrigerator (or pull breaker).
- Remove the freezer evaporator cover.
- Unclip the old thermistor and disconnect the wire connector.
- Clip the new thermistor into the same position. Connect.
- Reinstall the evaporator cover. Restore power.
The board auto-clears C1 once it reads valid data from the new sensor. No manual reset required.

C1 vs. C2
| Code | Sensor | Location |
|---|---|---|
| C1 | Freezer compartment thermistor | Behind freezer evaporator cover |
| C2 | Fresh food compartment thermistor | Inside fresh food section, rear wall |
Different sensors measuring different compartments. Same diagnostic approach, different locations.

Impact of C1 on Cooling
When the board cannot read freezer temperature:
- Some Maytag models default to continuous compressor operation (the freezer gets extremely cold, food over-freezes, frost builds excessively)
- Other models default to compressor off (the freezer warms, food thaws)
- Behavior depends on model and firmware version
Either default is undesirable. Replace the sensor promptly to restore normal temperature regulation.
