Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or reaching into the lint slot — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never tape, wedge or bypass a door switch to make a machine run with the door open: the switch is what stops a heater running into an open cabinet full of lint.
The line between a fix and a call
Call a technician when the catch or the hinge has worn, when the felt seal is flattened or missing, or when the machine will not run with the door closed firmly. Call sooner if hot air is escaping around the door, because that heat is not going up the duct and the machine is running hotter inside than it should.
