What this usually means
No heat on an Encore unit splits on one question: does this machine heat its own water, or does it rely on the house hot supply? If it relies on the house, the fault is a closed valve, reversed hoses, a blocked screen or a mixing valve, and the drum temperature simply follows the tap.
What owners actually observe
- Hot wash and cold wash take the same time and look the same — On a machine with a heater, a working heat phase lengthens the cycle noticeably.
- Powder or liquid detergent residue left in the drawer or the drum — Detergent needs warm water to disperse, so the drawer reports the temperature.
- A sanitize or allergy cycle refuses to run or times out — Those cycles depend on an internal heater, so they fail first when one does.
- Clothes come out hot on one programme and cold on another — That points at a mixing valve or a programme setting rather than a dead heater.
- NEAR MISS: only the first load of the day is cold — That is the house hot water arriving late down a long pipe run rather than anything inside the machine.
Causes, most likely first
- Hot supply closed, slow, or the hoses swapped at the valves — Most likely on this platform: hoses reversed at install put cold into the hot inlet, and the machine then mixes exactly as instructed and washes cold for years.
- Inlet screens blocked on the hot side — Second most likely here: screens are cheap, reachable with the valves closed, and they are the most overlooked restriction in a laundry.
- Mixing or inlet valve not opening the hot side — Third in order: the valve that blends hot and cold can fail on one side only, which gives warm-when-it-should-be-hot rather than a total failure.
Where to start, and what follows
- Run the laundry hot tap, then check which hose is on which valve — Feel both hoses during fill: the hot one should warm in your hand within a minute.
- Close the valves and inspect both inlet screens — A furred hot-side screen is a complete explanation and an owner-level fix.
- Compare a cold, a warm and the hottest programme — Different results across programmes point at mixing rather than at supply.
