The short answer
Check that the cabinet is level and not touching the units or the wall first. A whirring or harsh noise that changes when you open the freezer door is the evaporator fan; a rattle from underneath is usually the condenser fan or something near it.

- A rattle from underneath — The condenser fan or debris near it.
- Buzzing that comes and goes — Tubing or a panel vibrating.
- Gurgling after the machine stops — Refrigerant settling, and normal.

Track it down in this order
- Press gently on the cabinet while it runs — A change names the installation.
- Open the freezer and listen for the fan — Harshness there is the classic finding.

- Note whether cooling has changed at the same time — That separates nuisance from fault.

Working around a running appliance
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep the refrigerator at or below forty degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer at or below zero degrees Fahrenheit while you investigate. Never reach into a running fan, never chip frost from a fan blade, and never bend or cut tubing at the back of the cabinet.
When to call
Call when the cabinet is level and clear, nothing is stored on it, and a harsh or grinding noise remains - particularly if cooling has changed. An evaporator fan lives behind the rear freezer panel and a condenser fan under the cabinet, so both are technician jobs. A compressor that has become loud and no longer cools is usually a replacement conversation.
