The short answer
On a second refrigerator, check the room before the appliance: ambient temperature, coil dust, the shared circuit and the humidity around the gasket. Those explain most failures, and several of them are seasonal rather than permanent.
The complaints that arrive most often
- Freezer thawing in cold weather — The control sees no need to run.
- Constant running in hot weather — Ambient load plus dusty coils.
- Found dead days after it stopped — A tripped breaker or protected outlet.
- Mould or ice along the gasket — Humidity in the room.
- A drone that carries into the house — Bare-room acoustics and an uneven slab.
- Not this fault: sweating on the outside in humid weather — That is the room.
What is behind the list
- Ambient temperature outside a comfortable range — First, and it produces opposite symptoms in summer and winter.
- Condenser coils blanketed with dust, fur or sawdust — Second, and far faster than in a kitchen.
- Shared circuits tripping — Third.
- Humidity attacking seals and hinges — Fourth.
- Uneven slab causing noise and door closure problems — Fifth.
- Age-related thermostat, control and sealed-system faults — Last, and the point at which replacement enters the conversation.
Where secondary refrigerator complaints concentrate
General guidance| Problem class | Rank in this family | Owner-fixable? |
|---|---|---|
| Ambient and cooling behaviour | Highest | Partly |
| Coils and heat rejection | High | Often |
| Power, circuits and protected outlets | Medium | Often |
| Seals, humidity and door closure | Medium | Often |
| Noise, levelling and the floor | Lower | Often |
| Water, drains and condensation | Lower | Often |

Before you start
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep the refrigerator at or below forty degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer at or below zero degrees Fahrenheit wherever the machine stands. Never run it from an extension lead, never operate it while standing in water, and keep fuel and solvent containers away from an appliance that sparks on start.
When to call
Call an electrician for a circuit that trips repeatedly or an outbuilding with no properly rated outlet. Call an appliance technician after the ambient, the coils, the supply and the seal have been checked. On a machine that is already old, ask for an assessment and a total price rather than a parts order, because replacement is a real answer here more often than it is in a kitchen.

Scope of this overview
A badge-level overview generalized across refrigerator families, written for secondary machines in garages, basements and outbuildings; where a family-specific or model-specific page exists it is the narrower answer. The ranking is an ordering of problem classes, not a measurement. Not here: ambient rating classes, refrigerant data and part numbers.
