The short answer
On a secondary machine, expect the gasket to be damp, mouldy or frozen at the seal line rather than simply worn. Clean and dry it first, check the cabinet is level on an uneven floor, and confirm the door actually closes when the machine is loaded.
What a garage machine shows

- Ice forming along the seal line in winter — Moisture freezing where it leaks.
- A door found standing ajar — It never latched after loading.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep the refrigerator at or below forty degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer at or below zero degrees Fahrenheit even in a garage. Do not operate an appliance while standing in water, support a loaded door before loosening any hinge, and never chip ice from a seal with a sharp tool.
When to call
Call when the gasket has perished rather than merely dirtied, when a hinge has corroded, or when a level cabinet with a clean seal still leaks. On an older second machine, ask the price and the parts position first - a gasket that is no longer made turns a small job into a replacement decision.
