In a garage or basement, check the room temperature, the condenser coils and the power before the appliance. Summer heat and dusty coils cause constant running with poor cooling; winter cold causes a machine that stops running and a freezer that thaws.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep the refrigerator at or below forty degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer at or below zero degrees Fahrenheit, wherever the machine stands. Do not run a refrigerator from an extension lead, and never store fuel or solvent containers beside an appliance that sparks when it starts.
When to call
Call when the room is within a reasonable range, the coils are clean, the supply is sound and the machine still will not hold temperature. Mention the installation when you book: a technician who knows the machine is in a garage will consider ambient behaviour before ordering parts. Weigh the repair against the age of what is usually an older second appliance.
