The short answer
Test the seal with a sheet of paper all the way around. Frost inside, a machine that runs constantly, and moisture on the outside of the cabinet are all symptoms of a gap. Most are the gasket, a stored package fouling the opening, or a sagging door.
What a failing seal looks like
- Frost building up quickly inside — Humid room air getting in.
- The machine runs almost all the time — It is fighting a continuous heat leak.
- Water or ice at the seal line — Warm air condensing where it enters.
- The lid or door will not stay shut — A hinge or latch issue.
- Food showing freezer burn — The result of moisture and cycling.
- Not this fault: frost only on the back wall — Read the defrost side of the cooling page.

- Gasket hardened, torn or dirty — First on both chest and upright machines.
- A package or basket fouling the opening — Second, and the commonest of all on a full chest freezer.
- Upright door sagging on its hinge — Third.
- Machine not level, so the lid or door does not settle — Fourth, and common on a garage floor.
- Latch worn or misaligned — Fifth.
- Cabinet distorted after heavy frost build-up — Last.

- Run a sheet of paper around the whole opening — Any place it pulls out freely is a leak.
- Empty the top layer and close it again — Packages fouling the seal are very common.
- Check the machine is level with a spirit level — A tilted cabinet holds a lid open.
- Clean the gasket and the sealing face — Sticky residue prevents full contact.

Defrosting and food safety
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep a freezer at or below zero degrees Fahrenheit. When defrosting, never chip ice with a knife or screwdriver: the evaporator tubing sits behind that ice, and puncturing it ends the machine. Move food to a cool box and do not refreeze anything that has thawed above refrigerator temperature.
When to call
Call when the gasket is clean and intact, nothing fouls the opening, the cabinet is level and the seal still leaks - that points at the hinge, the latch or the cabinet itself. Ask about gasket availability before agreeing to anything: on older standalone freezers the part decides whether a repair is possible at all.
