The short answer
Check that the cabinet is level and not touching a wall before anything else, because contact and rocking cause most standalone freezer noise. A buzz that follows the compressor usually means mountings or coil contact; a rattle is normally something on or beside the machine.
What you hear
- A deep hum from the compressor — Normal unless it is new or much louder.
- A buzz or rattle from the back of the cabinet — Tubing or a coil touching the cabinet.
- Rocking or thumping on the floor — The cabinet is not level.
- A fan noise on an upright model — A fan blade fouling frost or a fan bearing.
- Gurgling or cracking between cycles — Refrigerant movement and thermal contraction.

Working around a freezer
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep a freezer at or below zero degrees Fahrenheit while you investigate, and keep the door or lid closed. Never bend, cut or lever tubing at the rear of the cabinet: it forms part of the sealed system, and a puncture ends the appliance.
When to call
Call when the cabinet is level and clear, nothing is stored on it, and a harsh or new noise remains - especially if cooling has changed at the same time. A compressor that has become loud and is no longer holding temperature is usually a replacement decision rather than a repair, so ask for that assessment when you book.
