The short answer
Check the door seal, the airflow around the cabinet and the frost pattern first. A freezer that runs constantly and still warms points at heat rejection or a sealed-system fault; one that does not run at all points at power, the thermostat or a cold ambient temperature.
What you observe
- Food softening while the machine still runs — Losing capacity rather than failing outright.
- The machine never seems to stop running — Heat rejection, seal loss or a sealed-system fault.
- Completely silent and warming — Power, thermostat or a cold ambient cut-out.
- Heavy frost on one wall only — Airflow or a defrost fault.
- Worse in hot weather in a garage — Ambient heat load.
- Not this fault: the machine cycles and holds temperature — Working normally.

- Decide about the food before diagnosing — Safety first, then the appliance.

- Listen for the compressor running at all — Silence and constant running mean different things.

Frozen food and sealed systems
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep a freezer at or below zero degrees Fahrenheit. Food that has thawed above refrigerator temperature should not be refrozen. Never puncture, cut or heat any tubing on the sealed system, and never attempt refrigerant work.
When to call
Call promptly when the seal is good, the coils are clean, the ambient is reasonable and the machine still cannot hold temperature - a failing freezer full of food is a time-limited problem. Call immediately if the compressor runs continuously and the cabinet is warming. Ask about parts availability first: on an older standalone freezer it often decides the outcome.
