The short answer
Check whether the cabinet is still freezing first, because a leak from a warming freezer is melt and a much bigger problem. Then check the drain plug on a chest model or the drain channel on an upright, and look at the seal for condensation forming at a gap.

- Water at the base of a chest freezer — The drain plug or a manual defrost.
- Ice on the floor of an upright cabinet — A blocked defrost drain.
- Condensation running down the outside — Humid air meeting a cold cabinet, often at a seal gap.

Water, ice and food
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep a freezer at or below zero degrees Fahrenheit; food that has thawed above refrigerator temperature should not be refrozen. Never chip ice with a knife or screwdriver - the evaporator tubing lies behind it. Do not stand in water to operate or unplug the machine.
When to call
Call urgently if the cabinet is no longer freezing, because the water is melting food. Call for a blocked defrost drain on an upright model if warm water does not clear it, since the drain heater and the channel sit behind the interior panel. A chest freezer that leaks only at its plug rarely needs a technician at all.
