The standing rule
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and in a microwave that charge can kill, so the case is never opened at home. Never run the unit empty, and stop using it if the waveguide cover is scorched or if you see arcing.
What you can and cannot take on
Moving the unit to its own wall socket, giving it clearance, cleaning the cavity and the cover face, washing the plate and roller ring and clearing a lock are all owner work. Anything behind the case is not, and that includes every heating fault and every interlock switch. Disconnect and call, rather than diagnose, if there is arcing, scorching or a burning smell.
