The short answer
On a counter-standing unit an erratic display is usually a supply problem: a shared circuit, a long extension lead or a loose plug. A panel that stays lit but ignores keys is a lock mode or a keypad, in that order of likelihood.
What you notice
- The clock flashes as if power was interrupted — The supply dropped, however briefly.
- The display dims when another appliance starts — A shared or overloaded circuit under load.
- Keys ignored while the display stays bright — Lock mode or keypad, and nothing to do with supply.
- The unit resets partway through a cook cycle — A poor connection at the plug or socket, or a circuit at its limit.
- A code or letter appears and clears on a power cycle — A latched control state rather than a failure.

Before anything else
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and on a microwave that charge can kill; the case is never an owner boundary. A plug or socket that is warm to the touch is a reason to stop using the appliance and have the circuit looked at, not a quirk to work around.
When to hand it over
Call when the unit still resets on a known-good dedicated socket, when display segments are missing, or when the panel ignores keys after the lock is proven clear and the panel is dry. Treat a warm plug, a discoloured socket or any burning smell as an electrical fault to be dealt with at once rather than a control problem to keep testing.
