The short answer
When a noise ignores the vent fan and appears with cooking, the candidates narrow to the turntable drive, the cooling fan, the stirrer and the magnetron. The first two are cheap and common; the last is a service call and the reason nobody should open the case.
What the sound does
- A grind that stops when the glass plate is lifted out — Drive coupler or motor, and easy to confirm.
- A whine that rises steadily during a long cycle — Cooling-fan bearing, which warms and dries as it runs.
- A flutter or ticking above the cavity ceiling — Stirrer blade catching, typically behind the waveguide cover.
- A heavy hum that starts exactly when power is applied to the food — Transformer and magnetron under load.
- Vibration felt through the counter but no distinct noise — Feet, shelf or an unbalanced load rather than a failing part.
- Not this fault: buzzing only while the vent fan runs — That is the blower branch and it is on the companion noise page.
Ranked for cooking-system noise
- Turntable drive coupler or motor worn — First here. The coupler is plastic, it wears round, and the plate then drags instead of turning.
- Grit or spill residue under the roller ring — Second, and it mimics a failed motor closely enough that owners replace parts they did not need.
- Cooling-fan bearing dry — Third: the whine rises with run time and is steady rather than rhythmic.
- Stirrer blade fouling behind the waveguide cover — Fourth, and worth naming because a damaged waveguide cover is a reason to stop using the unit.
- Magnetron or transformer noise under load — Fifth, and the only verdict here that is never owner work.
- Unit resonating against the counter or a shelf — Last as a fault, first as a five-second check.
Order of checks
- Run a cup of water and note exactly when the noise begins — Cooking-only noise and standby noise are different investigations.
- Lift out the plate and roller ring, then repeat the same run — Silence names the turntable path immediately.
- Slide the unit a hand-span on the counter and repeat — It removes resonance from the list without any disassembly.
- Listen at the top vents for a rising whine — A bearing sound climbs with time; a mechanical one does not.

Why the case stays on
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a microwave capacitor holds enough to kill long after the unit is disconnected. Never run the unit empty to reproduce a noise; without a load the energy has nowhere to go and the magnetron suffers. Leave the door switches and latch assembly exactly as the factory set them.
When to stop and call
Call when the noise persists with the plate and roller ring removed, because everything left is behind the case. Call as well for a whine that keeps climbing, for any flutter from above the cavity ceiling, and for a heavy hum that is clearly new. Stop using the appliance and call if the waveguide cover is scorched or if you see any arcing while food is heating.
