Front or back decides everything
Two different things leak on a builder-installed refrigerator, and they need different answers. Water at the front of the cabinet is a blocked defrost drain. Water behind or under it is the supply connection that was made at build. Find out which before touching anything.
What you are seeing
- Water pooling under the salad drawers or at the front of the cabinet.
- Ice building on the floor of the freezer compartment.
- A wet patch on the floor behind or under the appliance.
- Damp or staining on the cabinet base next to the appliance.
- Water appearing only after a defrost cycle.
- Not this fault: Frost across the freezer walls is an icing pattern - check the door seal.
- Not this fault: Condensation on the outside of the doors points at the seal.
Most likely causes, in builder-installed order
- Defrost drain blocked, so melt water backs up into the cabinet — Why ranked: First for any water inside the appliance. It is the single commonest source of an interior pool.
- Supply connection behind the appliance weeping — Why ranked: Second on a builder installation, because it was made once at build and never inspected since.
- Appliance tilted forward, so water runs to the front — Why ranked: Third. The floor has settled and the drain path no longer falls the way it should.
- Door not sealing, so heavy frost forms and then melts — Why ranked: Fourth. More moisture in means more melt than the drain can carry.
- Drip pan cracked or dislodged — Why ranked: Last, and identified by water underneath with a dry connection and a clear drain.
What to check, in order
- Establish whether the water is inside the cabinet or behind it. — Because: These are two unrelated faults and everything after this depends on which one you have.
- Look for ice on the floor of the freezer above the drain. — Because: A blocked defrost drain ices there before it floods the cabinet below.
- Switch off at the breaker and check the supply fitting behind the appliance. — Because: A build-stage connection that has never been inspected is a real candidate here.
- Put a level on top of the appliance front to back. — Because: A forward tilt sends melt water to the front instead of to the drain.
Checks you can do safely
- Dry the cabinet and put paper under the appliance to locate the source. — N: 1 — Tools: Towels, paper — Time: quick
- Flush the defrost drain from inside the freezer with warm water. — N: 2 — Tools: Warm water, syringe — Time: moderate
- Close the shut-off valve and check the fitting behind the appliance. — N: 3 — Tools: Torch, towels — Time: moderate
- Level the appliance so it sits level or tilts very slightly back. — N: 4 — Tools: Wrench, level — Time: moderate
- Check the drip pan under the appliance is seated and intact. — N: 5 — Tools: Torch — Time: moderate
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or reaching behind it. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Close the water shut-off before touching any fitting, and never push a wire into a drain - a punctured liner cannot be repaired. Dry the floor promptly; water and an electrical appliance do not mix. Flush a drain with warm water, never a hard tool. Get help before moving a full-size appliance out of a tight opening.
When this becomes a service call
Water returns after the drain has been flushed and the appliance levelled. There is any weep at the supply fitting behind the appliance. Water is reaching the cabinet base or the floor under the joinery. Ice reforms above the drain within days of clearing it.
