Start at the cabinet opening
These refrigerators are supplied with the building rather than chosen by the household, and they are set into a cabinet opening at handover and rarely moved again. That makes the cabinet surround the first thing to check: an opening built tight, or a toe-kick grille that has never been cleared, starves the condenser and shows up as a cabinet that will not hold temperature. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 F (4 C) or below.
What you are seeing
- The fresh food side is warm while the freezer still works.
- It runs constantly and never satisfies.
- Cooling is worse in hot weather or when the kitchen is in use.
- The side or top of the surround is warm to the touch.
- Temperature recovers slowly after the door has been open.
- Not this fault: Nothing running at all is a start fault - read that page.
- Not this fault: Frost that has swallowed the freezer is an icing pattern; check the door first.
Most likely causes, in builder-installed order
- Cabinet opening too tight, or the top and sides blocked — Why ranked: First on a builder-installed unit. The clearance is fixed by the joinery and it is often less than the appliance needs.
- Toe-kick or rear grille packed with dust and pet hair — Why ranked: Second: it was clear at handover and has usually never been touched since.
- Condenser fan blocked or failing — Why ranked: Third. Once airflow is restricted the fan carries the whole load and it is the next thing to go.
- Door not sealing, so it never catches up — Why ranked: Fourth. A refrigerator that runs continuously against an open door looks exactly like a cooling failure.
- Sealed system or compressor fault — Why ranked: Last, and reached only after clearance, a clean condenser and a proven seal.
What to check, in order
- Look at the gap above and beside the refrigerator in its opening. — Because: This is set by the cabinet, not the appliance, and it is the leading cause on this class of installation.
- Pull the toe-kick grille and look at the condenser and the fan. — Because: On a built-in opening this is often the only airflow path there is.
- Feel whether the surround gets warm after the appliance has run. — Because: Warm joinery means the heat is being trapped rather than carried away.
- Check the door closes on its own and holds a paper strip all round. — Because: A door that never seals produces a continuous run that mimics a failure.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 F (4 C) or below and a freezer at 0 F (-18 C) or below. Sealed-system work requires a licensed technician. Isolate before pulling the toe-kick or any rear panel. Never run the appliance with a grille removed. Get help before sliding a full-size unit out of a tight opening.
When this becomes a service call
The cabinet stays warm after the condenser is clean and the seal is proven. The compressor runs continuously and never cycles off. There is hissing, or oily residue near the compressor. The freezer works and the fresh food side does not.
