The floor moved, not the seal
A refrigerator set into a cabinet opening at build depends on the floor under it staying where it was. New subfloors settle, the appliance tilts forward, and the door stops closing on its own. Level it before deciding the seal has failed.
What you are seeing
- The door no longer closes on its own from a small angle.
- Condensation on the frame or between the doors.
- Heavy frost in the freezer compartment.
- A visible gap along one edge of the door.
- The seal is soft, wavy or lifted out of its channel.
- Not this fault: A warm cabinet with a proven seal is a cooling fault - read that page.
- Not this fault: Water in the base is usually a blocked drain.
Most likely causes, in builder-installed order
- Appliance tilted forward as the floor settled — Why ranked: First on a builder installation. A new subfloor moves in the first years and nothing re-levels the appliance.
- Door out of alignment in a tight cabinet opening — Why ranked: Second: a narrow opening leaves no room for a door that has dropped, and it catches on the joinery.
- Seal soft, wavy or out of its channel — Why ranked: Third. It can often be reseated or reshaped rather than replaced.
- Hinge worn or fasteners loose — Why ranked: Fourth. Heavy doors with loaded racks work their hinges loose over years.
- Seal hardened or split with age — Why ranked: Last, and identified by a seal that stays dented when pressed.
What to check, in order
- Put a level on top of the appliance front to back. — Because: A forward tilt stops the door self-closing, and it is the leading cause on this installation.
- Let the door go from a small angle and watch whether it closes. — Because: This is the quickest test of both levelling and hinge condition.
- Close the door on a paper strip at the top, sides and bottom. — Because: Uneven grip locates the gap without any disassembly.
- Look at whether the door catches the cabinet joinery as it swings. — Because: A tight opening can hold a dropped door open on its own.
Checks you can do safely
- Put a level on the top and note any forward tilt. — N: 1 — Tools: Level — Time: quick
- Adjust the front feet until it sits level or tilts very slightly back. — N: 2 — Tools: Wrench, level — Time: moderate
- Wash the seal and its channel and dry both fully. — N: 3 — Tools: Cloth — Time: moderate
- Press any lifted section of seal back into its channel. — N: 4 — Tools: None — Time: quick
- Test the seal with a paper strip all round and note where it slips. — N: 5 — Tools: Paper strip — Time: quick
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or a hinge cover. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 F (4 C) or below - a door left ajar overnight can put the contents outside that range. Never tape or wedge a door to close a gap. Empty the door racks before adjusting a hinge. Get help before moving a full-size appliance in a tight opening.
When this becomes a service call
A gap remains after levelling and cleaning the seal. The door has dropped and catches the cabinet. The seal is split or will not stay in its channel. The appliance cannot hold temperature with a proven seal.
