Check it was ever commissioned
On a builder-installed refrigerator the commonest ice complaint is not a failure at all: the water line was never connected at handover, or the ice maker arm was left in the off position. Check both before assuming the module has failed.
What you are seeing
- No ice has ever been produced since moving in.
- The ice maker fills partly and then stops.
- Ice tastes stale or smells of the freezer.
- Cubes are hollow or very small.
- The dispenser runs but no water arrives.

Most likely causes, in builder-installed order
- Supply line never connected or the shut-off left closed — Why ranked: First on a new-build installation. Nothing downstream matters until water can reach the appliance.
- Ice maker arm or switch left in the off position — Why ranked: Second: it ships off, and it is only turned on if somebody remembers at handover.
- Freezer not cold enough to trigger a harvest — Why ranked: Third. A module will not cycle until the compartment reaches its threshold, so a cooling problem presents as an ice problem.
- Fill tube or inlet valve iced or restricted — Why ranked: Fourth. Partial fills and hollow cubes come from a restricted supply rather than the module.
- Ice maker module failure — Why ranked: Last, and reached only once water, the switch and freezer temperature are all confirmed.
What to check, in order
- Find the shut-off valve behind or below the cabinet and check it is open. — Because: A closed valve at handover explains an ice maker that has never worked once.
- Look for the ice maker arm or switch and confirm it is on. — Because: The module ships off and stays off until somebody turns it on.
- Put a thermometer in the freezer and read it after a day. — Because: A module will not harvest until the compartment is cold enough.
- Look at the fill cup for ice built up around the tube. — Because: A restricted fill gives partial and hollow cubes rather than none at all.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A freezer holds food safely at 0 F (-18 C) or below; an ice maker will not cycle reliably above that. Close the shut-off valve before disturbing any water connection. Never force a frozen fill tube with a hard tool. Do not put hot water into a freezer compartment. Close the water supply before touching a fitting.
When this becomes a service call
Water reaches the appliance, the arm is on, the freezer is cold, and there is still no ice. The module fills and overflows. Ice forms in the fill tube repeatedly after clearing. There is any water at the connection behind the appliance.
