The cabinet is part of the cooling system
Diplomat refrigeration is normally fully integrated: the appliance lives inside a kitchen cabinet behind a furniture door, and it can only reject heat up the duct behind that cabinet. When an integrated unit stops holding temperature, the duct is the first suspect, not the compressor. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 F (4 C) or below.
What you are seeing
- The compartment is cool but never properly cold.
- The compressor runs almost continuously.
- The cabinet above the appliance is warm to the touch.
- Cooling is worse in summer and acceptable in winter.
- Items at the back freeze while the front stays warm.
- Not this fault: A dead unit with no interior light is a no-power fault - read the will-not-start page.
- Not this fault: Frost on the rear wall of a static-cooled compartment is normal, not a fault.
Most likely causes, in Diplomat order
- Ventilation duct behind the cabinet blocked or never built — Why ranked: First on an integrated appliance. It is invisible from the kitchen, it is frequently omitted or filled during a refit, and nothing else explains a slow decline so completely.
- Plinth vent blocked by flooring, a kick board or stored items — Why ranked: Second: the air has to get in at the bottom, and new flooring laid over a plinth vent is a very common finding.
- Condenser at the back matted with dust — Why ranked: Third. An integrated unit sits in a closed cavity that traps dust, and the coil is rarely cleaned because nobody sees it.
- Furniture door coupling holding the appliance door slightly open — Why ranked: Fourth. A dragging slide kit stops the appliance door pulling itself fully shut, which loads the system continuously.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — Why ranked: Last, and identified by being unaffected by the duct, the plinth, the coil and the door.
What to check, in order
- Feel whether the cabinet above the appliance is warm while it runs. — Because: Warm there means air is moving; nothing at all means the duct is blocked, which is the leading cause.
- Look at the plinth vent and check nothing covers or fills it. — Because: Flooring and kick boards defeat the intake, and this is visible without moving anything.
- Note whether the problem is seasonal. — Because: A unit that copes in winter and fails in summer is an airflow problem, not a refrigerant one.
- Open the furniture door and then the appliance door separately. — Because: This shows whether the coupling is dragging and holding the inner door off its seal.
Checks you can do safely
- Put a thermometer inside and record the temperature over a settled day. — N: 1 — Tools: Thermometer — Time: one day
- Clear anything covering the plinth vent, including flooring build-up and stored items. — N: 2 — Tools: None — Time: moderate
- Check that the cabinet above has a vent path and that it is not filled or boxed in. — N: 3 — Tools: Torch — Time: moderate

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 F (4 C) or below and a freezer at 0 F (-18 C) or below; judge food that has been warm by time and temperature rather than by smell. Never draw an integrated appliance out of its housing alone - it is a heavy appliance in a tight cavity. Do not run the unit with the plinth or the duct blocked to see whether it copes. Sealed-system and refrigerant work is licensed work.
When this becomes a service call
The unit cannot hold with a clear duct, a clear plinth and a clean condenser. The compressor runs continuously and the cavity behind never gets warm. There is any hissing or oily residue behind the appliance. The cabinet was built with no ventilation duct at all.
