The housing is the amplifier
An integrated appliance sits inside a wooden box that is screwed to the wall and to its neighbours, so noise complaints here are usually the housing rather than the machine. A cabinet touching the appliance, or a furniture door that rattles against a stile, will be far more audible than the compressor itself.
What you are seeing
- A buzz that seems to come from the cabinet run rather than the appliance.
- A rattle from the furniture door when the compressor runs.
- A hum that is worse at certain times of day.
- A knock as the compressor starts or stops.
- A gurgle after the compressor shuts down.

Most likely causes, in Diplomat order
- Appliance touching the housing or a fixing over-tightened — Why ranked: First on an integrated unit. Pressure on the cabinet changing the sound is the whole test and it needs no tools.
- Furniture door or its coupling rattling against the frame — Why ranked: Second: the outer door is a large flat panel with its own resonance, and a slightly loose coupling will buzz with the compressor.
- Appliance not level, so it rests unevenly in the housing — Why ranked: Third. Uneven support twists the cabinet slightly and it then contacts the housing at one point.
- Rear condenser or pipework touching the housing or the wall — Why ranked: Fourth. Pipework that touches transmits the compressor straight into the joinery, which is why the noise seems to come from the kitchen rather than the appliance.
- Compressor mounts hardened or the compressor becoming noisy — Why ranked: Last, and identified by a sound that does not change with pressure, levelling or door position.
What to check, in order
- Press a hand firmly on the cabinet, the plinth and the furniture door in turn while it runs. — Because: A change in the sound identifies contact noise and rules out the mechanism.
- Open the furniture door and listen with it out of contact. — Because: If the noise stops, the outer door and its coupling are the cause.
- Check the appliance sits level and does not rock in the housing. — Because: Uneven support is a common finding after flooring or joinery work.
- Note whether a knock coincides with the compressor starting or stopping. — Because: Start-and-stop knocks point at mounts rather than at anything rotating.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never draw an integrated appliance out of its housing alone to chase a noise; it is a heavy appliance in a tight cavity and the joinery is easily damaged. Do not pack material into the cavity to muffle a noise; the duct is what cools the appliance. Keep fingers clear of the coupling when moving the doors. Wait for any fan to stop before reaching behind the appliance.
When this becomes a service call
A grinding or screeching noise that does not change with pressure or levelling. A knock at every start that has grown louder over time. Noise together with a loss of cooling. Any noise accompanied by a burning smell.
