Cold dishes, two possible causes
A dishwasher that finishes with cold, wet dishes has either lost its heater or was never given hot water to begin with. On a compact machine fed from an under-sink supply, the incoming water temperature is the more common half of that pair, and it costs nothing to test.
What you are seeing
- Dishes are cold and wet at the end of every cycle.
- Plastics never dry, and neither does anything else.
- Grease is left on pans that used to come clean.
- The tub is only lukewarm when the door is opened at the end.
- The cycle takes far longer than it used to.

Most likely causes, in Dencrest order
- Incoming water is cold or the hot run is long — Why ranked: First on an under-sink installation. Running the tap hot before starting is a complete diagnostic in itself.
- Heating element or its relay failed — Why ranked: Second. The signature is a machine that runs the full cycle correctly and simply never warms, with no code and no other symptom.
- Thermostat or temperature sensor out of range — Why ranked: Third: a sensor reading high tells the control the water is already hot, so it never calls for heat, and the cycle time often shortens rather than lengthens.
- Rinse aid empty, so drying appears to fail — Why ranked: Fourth. This is a drying complaint mistaken for a heating one, and it is worth excluding before any part is considered.
- Machine set to an eco or cold programme — Why ranked: Last, but genuinely common - a low-temperature programme selected by accident behaves exactly like a heater fault.
What to check, in order
- Run the kitchen hot tap until it is hot, then start the cycle immediately. — Because: If results improve, the fault is the supply run and not the appliance at all.
- Open the door partway through the wash and feel whether the tub is warm. — Because: Warm mid-cycle with cold dishes at the end is a drying and rinse-aid issue rather than a heating one.
- Check which programme is selected and try a standard hot one. — Because: An eco programme explains cold results with a perfectly healthy heater.
- Note whether the cycle has become longer or shorter. — Because: Longer means the machine is trying and failing to heat; shorter means it thinks it is already hot.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The heating element sits in the base of the tub and stays hot after the cycle - do not reach in immediately, and never rest plastics against it. Do not open the door fully mid-cycle - hot water and steam come out. Never run the machine with a plastic item resting on the base. Element and relay work means live terminals and is a service job.
When this becomes a service call
The tub stays cold through the whole cycle on a hot supply and a standard programme. The cycle time has changed sharply with no change in use. There is a smell of scorched plastic during the wash. The breaker trips when the heating stage begins.
