On an upright freezer with an ice maker, a bin that stays empty is almost always a water, temperature or switch problem — and the mechanism itself is the last thing to suspect rather than the first. On a Crosley a cabinet not cold enough to trigger the harvest comes first, because these units change homes more than most, and levelling, hose routing and venting are what the move breaks first. The shut-off arm, the supply valve, the filter and the cabinet temperature are owner work; the module, heater and fill valve are not.
The observables
- Cubes are small, hollow or fused together — A partial fill, usually flow restriction or a fill tube starting to freeze.
- The mould is full of ice that never ejects — The harvest is failing rather than the fill.
- Ice has welded into a single block in the bin — Slow use plus temperature swings, often behind a marginal seal.
- NEAR MISS — Ice tastes of the freezer — That is a storage and filter issue, not a production fault.
Causes, most likely first
- A cabinet not cold enough to trigger the harvest — Most likely here: these units change homes more than most, and levelling, hose routing and venting are what the move breaks first. The harvest cycle starts when the mould reaches a set temperature; a freezer running warm never reaches it and simply stops making ice.
- A shut-off arm raised or the module switched off — Second on the list: The arm stops production when the bin is full and it is very easily left up after the bin is removed for cleaning or the freezer is packed.
- A closed or crushed water line behind the cabinet — Third on the list: A standalone freezer is pushed against a wall, and its supply line is the thing that gets crushed when it goes back.
- A water filter that is long overdue — Fourth on the list, and the least likely: A blocked filter restricts the fill so the mould is only partly filled, which shows as small or hollow cubes before it shows as none. The service history is usually unknown, so the filters and seals are older than the owner thinks.
What to check first, second, third
- Put a thermometer in the cabinet overnight rather than reading the dial — A cabinet warmer than it should be explains an idle ice maker with nothing wrong in the module. It leads because these units change homes more than most, and levelling, hose routing and venting are what the move breaks first, so proving or clearing it immediately narrows everything below.
- Look for the wire arm or the on-off switch on the module — A raised arm is a complete explanation and takes a second to correct.
- Pull the cabinet out and follow the line to its valve — A crushed line or a valve closed during other work is a very common finding.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Refrigerant is licensed work: oil or a hiss at the compressor means stop and call, and two people move a cabinet this size.
Where an owner fix ends
Call when the arm is down, the valve is open, the filter is fresh and the cabinet is properly cold, and the mould is still not cycling — the module and the fill valve are inside the cabinet. One line to keep in mind while you wait: A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.
