On a Cuisinart freezer, no ice and poor ice are different faults. Nothing at all points at supply or command; small and hollow cubes point at fill volume. Deciding which you have removes half the list immediately. It matters that this is a kitchen nameplate whose refrigeration and microwave products are contract-built compacts rather than in-house designs, because that is what decides the order below.
The symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- The bin is empty and the mould is dry — Nothing is arriving; the fault is upstream of the maker.
- Cubes are small, hollow or misshapen — A fill-volume problem rather than a maker problem.
- A cycle runs and dumps nothing — The command chain is intact and the water is not.
- NEAR MISS — no ice and the compartment is not properly cold — Fix the cooling first; the maker is behaving correctly for that temperature.
The causes in the order they actually occur here
- Supply valve closed, line kinked or frozen — The isolating valve behind the cabinet is closed during other work and rarely reopened, and a pinched line behind a pushed-back unit does the same. Ranked first here because these units are bought for a countertop or a small kitchen and are run intermittently, and an appliance that cycles rather than runs steadily fails at its switches and its fans first.
- Feeler arm up or the maker switched off — Panel settings and module switches get used and forgotten, and both stop production silently.
- Compartment not cold enough to harvest — The mould thermostat holds the batch until the compartment reaches its harvest temperature, so a freezer running warm simply never cycles.
- Fill valve not opening fully — A partially opening valve gives short fills, which look exactly like a restriction elsewhere.
- Ice maker module or mould heater failed — It is last because it is the only item here that needs a part and the only one that cannot be proved from outside.
Check in this order, and why
- Follow the supply line behind the unit and confirm the valve is open and the tube is straight — First — It is the most common cause and it is visible without removing anything.
- Look at the arm position and any on-off control on the module or panel — Second — It is a glance and it accounts for a large share of no-ice calls.
- Leave a thermometer in the compartment and compare with the USDA safe freezer temperature — Third — If the compartment is not cold enough, nothing else in the chain can work.
Steps you can take yourself
- Lower the arm and enable the maker — Check both the mechanical arm and any panel setting, then allow a full cycle.
About 5 min
- Measure the compartment temperature overnight — Compare with the USDA safe freezer temperature rather than the dial setting.
Tools: thermometerAbout 10 min
- STOP before removing the module or testing the fill valve — That work is live and behind trim; it is a service call.
Safety first
Safety
Unplug the freezer or switch off its breaker before removing the ice maker or any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water supply before disturbing a fitting, and never thaw a frozen fill tube with a flame or a hot tool. allowlist:unplug-before-service allowlist:freezer-0f
When to call a technician
The owner chain is supply, arm, temperature, filter — four checks that between them resolve most complaints. Past that point the work involves live terminals and a module matched to the cabinet, which is where a technician takes over. Mention the installation when you call — these are countertop or under-counter units, usually crowded by cabinetry with little clearance behind.

Generalized information — what is not here
This page covers the Cuisinart freezer as a class rather than one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, it is the more specific answer and is linked below. Not covered here: module part numbers, harvest timing and fill volume settings for each ice maker generation, which differ by model line.
