The short answer
A freezer lid or door that no longer seals costs more than a refrigerator door does, because everything that gets in turns into frost and frost eventually stops the cabinet cooling at all. A cabinet standing out of level is the first thing to suspect on a Crosley, because these units change homes more than most, and levelling, hose routing and venting are what the move breaks first. Cleaning, reseating a gasket, levelling and load management are owner work; hinge replacement and lid alignment are not.
What the machine is doing
- Frost builds rapidly and unevenly at one part of the opening — That is where the warm air is coming in.
- The lid or door does not pull itself shut — A chest lid that stays where you leave it is not being held by its seal.
- Condensation or ice on the outside of the cabinet edge — Warm moist room air meeting cold metal at a gap.
- NEAR MISS — A gasket that resists and then releases with a thump — That is a seal working as intended.
Likely causes in order
- A cabinet standing out of level — Top of the list on this brand: these units change homes more than most, and levelling, hose routing and venting are what the move breaks first. On an upright the door then fails to swing closed; on a chest freezer an unlevel cabinet twists the lid so it seals on one side only.
- Baskets or packets holding the lid or door open — Second most likely: On a chest freezer an overfilled basket props the lid by a few millimetres; on an upright a packet sticking past the shelf line does the same thing.
- A gasket dirty, iced or stuck to the frame — Third most likely: Spills freeze into the gasket channel and hold it out of shape, and an iced gasket tears when the lid is pulled open hard.
- A gasket hardened or torn with age — Fourth and the least likely here: Cold and time stiffen the rubber; the magnet still holds at points while the gasket no longer follows the frame between them. These platforms run for a long time, so wear is real — but it is slower to arrive than the install faults above it.
The order to work in
- Check level front to back and side to side — A garage or utility floor is rarely flat, and the cabinet takes its shape from it. It goes first because it is the cheapest thing to rule out and it decides which half of this list you are in.
- Close the lid slowly and watch where it stops meeting the seal — The obstruction is usually visible at the moment of contact and costs nothing to fix.
- Run a finger round the gasket and look for ice or residue in the folds — Ice in the channel means the gasket is being held open, which is both the symptom and the cause.
Hands-on checks
- Level the cabinet with its feet or with packing under the corners — On an upright, leave it tipped very slightly back so the door closes itself.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Refrigerant is licensed work: oil or a hiss at the compressor means stop and call, and two people move a cabinet this size.
When to stop and call
Call when the cabinet is level, nothing obstructs the opening, the gasket is clean and the banknote test still fails along a whole edge — a replacement gasket or a hinge adjustment on a heavy lid is precise work. One line to keep in mind while you wait: A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.
