A freezer that is running but no longer holding temperature is either failing to reject its heat, failing to keep warm air out, or buried in frost — and on a standalone freezer, where it lives usually matters as much as what is inside it. - Check the room temperature where the cabinet stands — A freezer in an unheated garage in winter can stop calling for cooling entirely while its contents slowly warm. It goes first because it is the cheapest thing to rule out and it decides which half of this list you are in.
- Look at the coil at the back, or feel the side skins for even warmth — A dust blanket on a rear coil is visible; on a skin-condenser cabinet look instead at clearance.
- Measure the frost with a finger against the wall — A layer thicker than a finger is worth removing regardless of anything else on this page.
What an owner can safely check
- Move the cabinet to a room within its rated climate range, or fit the maker’s low-ambient kit — Where moving is impossible, keeping the room above freezing does the same job.

Call when the room is within range, the coils are clean, the gasket seals and a full defrost restored cooling only temporarily — the defrost circuit and the sealed system both need the cabinet opened. One line to keep in mind while you wait: A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.
