On a Dacor freezer, no ice and poor ice are different faults. Nothing at all points at supply or command; small and hollow cubes point at fill volume. Deciding which you have removes half the list immediately. It matters that this is a luxury built-in line specified into a designed kitchen and expected to run quietly for a long time, because that is what decides the order below.
What you actually see
- The bin is empty and the mould is dry — Nothing is arriving; the fault is upstream of the maker.
- Cubes are small, hollow or misshapen — A fill-volume problem rather than a maker problem.
- A cycle runs and dumps nothing — The command chain is intact and the water is not.
- NEAR MISS — water on the floor — That is a supply or overflow fault and belongs on the leak page.
Ranked causes for this brand and appliance
- Supply valve closed, line kinked or frozen — The isolating valve behind the cabinet is closed during other work and rarely reopened, and a pinched line behind a pushed-back unit does the same. Ranked first here because this is a built-in platform with a lot of sensing and a lot of self-protection, so the machine usually stops itself for a reason it has detected rather than failing outright.
- Compartment not cold enough to harvest — An ice complaint is often the first visible symptom of a cooling or defrost problem.
- Fill valve not opening fully — The inlet solenoid is the part in this chain that genuinely fails, though less often than the things upstream of it.
- Filter or inlet screen restricted — A restricted filter reduces fill volume before it stops it, producing small and hollow cubes rather than none at all.
- Feeler arm up or the maker switched off — The wire arm is knocked into the full position by a bag of ice or a hand reaching past it.
The order of checks
- Follow the supply line behind the unit and confirm the valve is open and the tube is straight — First — It is the most common cause and it is visible without removing anything.
- Leave a thermometer in the compartment and compare with the USDA safe freezer temperature — Second — If the compartment is not cold enough, nothing else in the chain can work.
- Listen for the short buzz of the valve when a cycle calls for water — Third — Hearing the valve commanded separates a supply fault from a control fault.
