What you are looking at
Water at a freezer is either melt water that cannot get out, condensation forming where warm air is getting in, or — on a plumbed upright — the ice-maker supply. On a Criterion a blocked defrost drain or a drain plug left in comes first, because a value-tier build puts the cheap wearing parts — filters, hoses, seals, screens — in the path of everything the machine does, so they are where the fault usually is. Clearing the drain, mopping and fixing the seal are owner work; a cracked pan, an internal valve or a sealed-system fault is not.
The observables
- A flat sheet of ice under the bottom basket — Melt water freezing where it lies because it cannot escape.
- Water on the floor at the front of an upright — A blocked defrost drain overflowing forward.
- Wet patch at the back of a plumbed cabinet — The supply line, its valve or a push-fit joint.
- NEAR MISS — Water appearing only during a manual defrost — That is what a defrost does; the drain plug is there to manage it.
Why it happens, in order
- A blocked defrost drain or a drain plug left in — Most likely here: a value-tier build puts the cheap wearing parts — filters, hoses, seals, screens — in the path of everything the machine does, so they are where the fault usually is. A frost-free upright drains melt water through a small tube that blocks with debris and ice; a chest cabinet drains through a plug that is often left closed.
- The ice-maker supply line or valve — Second on the list: On a plumbed upright, the line and its shut-off valve live behind the cabinet where a weep runs unseen down the wall and across the floor.
- A displaced or cracked drain pan — Third on the list: The pan over the compressor evaporates the melt water; knocked out of place when the cabinet is moved, it spills onto the floor instead.
- A humid room and no clearance around the cabinet — Fourth on the list, and the least likely: In a damp garage or utility room, condensation forms on the outside of the cabinet and runs to the floor, which reads as a leak from underneath. A store-brand unit is usually carried home and set up by the owner rather than by a delivery crew, and setup errors survive for years.
The sequence that saves time
- Find the drain — a hole at the base of the rear panel or a plug low on a chest cabinet — Ice over the hole, or a plug still screwed in during a defrost, is the finding. Start here: on this platform it is both the most likely finding and the quickest to confirm.
- Dry the joints and check them with a tissue after an hour — Tissue finds a weep long before a hand does and identifies the joint.
- Look underneath at the back for the pan and check it is seated — A crooked or overfull pan explains floor water with a perfectly clear drain.

- Clear the drain with warm water poured slowly, and confirm it runs through — Do not push wire into the tube — it pierces easily.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Refrigerant is licensed work: oil or a hiss at the compressor means stop and call, and two people move a cabinet this size.
The line between DIY and a callout
Call when the drain runs freely, the gasket seals, the supply valve is proven and water still appears — a cracked pan or a defrost sensor fault needs the cabinet moved and opened. One line to keep in mind while you wait: A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.
