The short answer
Water on the floor around an ALPHA freezer is usually defrost meltwater that could not reach or pass the drain, and the drain is blocked with ice in most of those cases. The other common cause is a seal leak putting so much humid air into the cabinet that the defrost cycle produces more water than the system was designed to move. Plumbed cabinets add a third possibility at the back.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- A pool at the front of the cabinet after a defrost cycle — Meltwater overflowing an ice-capped drain. The most common presentation by far.
- Water inside the cabinet floor, under the baskets — Same cause, seen earlier: the water has not reached the floor yet.
- A continuous wet patch behind a plumbed cabinet — Supply side. Shut the household valve before anything else.
- Water only after a manual defrost — Expected, if the drain plug was not fitted or a tray was not placed. Not a fault.
- NEAR MISS: condensation on the outside of the cabinet in a damp room — Humidity, not a leak. It appears all over the cabinet rather than in one place.
Causes, most likely first
- Blocked or iced defrost drain — First, because the drain is short, cold and easily capped by the very ice it exists to remove.
- A seal leak producing excess frost — Second. More humid air in means more meltwater out, and a drain sized for normal duty cannot keep up.
- Drain pan cracked, missing or displaced — Third. Common on freezers that have been moved between rooms.
- Manual defrost done without a tray or plug — Fourth, and not really a fault: it is a procedure that was missed.
- Water supply line, on plumbed cabinets only — Last, and the only one that runs at mains pressure with the appliance switched off.
The order to work in, and why
- Establish whether the cabinet is plumbed at all — If it is not, the water is meltwater and the search is inside.
- Look for a drain outlet inside and check it for ice — The most likely cause, visible without tools.
- Check the seal with a sheet of paper — Because excess frost has a cause, and the seal is usually it.
- Look at the drain pan on the deck last — Least likely and hardest to see, so it goes at the end.
Hands-on, without tools you do not own
- Defrost the cabinet completely with the contents elsewhere — Doors or lid open, towels down, several hours. This clears an iced drain without any tool.

- Flush the drain outlet with warm water — Once thawed, a slow pour proves whether the tube runs. A backup means the blockage is further along.

Before you touch it
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not clear an iced drain with a screwdriver or a skewer: the tube runs against the evaporator, and a puncture releases refrigerant and ends the cabinet. Water on a garage or utility floor around a mains appliance is the real hazard here, so deal with the puddle and the extension leads before you deal with the freezer.
Where the owner fix ends
Call when the drain will not run after a full defrost, because the blockage is then inside the tube where warm water cannot reach. Call also when frost rebuilds fast enough to overwhelm the drain within weeks, since that is a seal or defrost fault rather than a drainage one. On a plumbed cabinet, treat any leak you cannot stop at a valve as urgent: mains pressure behind a freezer in a room nobody visits daily is how floors get ruined.
