In one paragraph
A freezer that is running but no longer holding temperature is either failing to reject its heat, failing to keep warm air out, or buried in frost — and on a standalone freezer, where it lives usually matters as much as what is inside it. Frost thick enough to insulate the walls is the first thing to suspect on a Criterion, because a value-tier build puts the cheap wearing parts — filters, hoses, seals, screens — in the path of everything the machine does, so they are where the fault usually is. Coil cleaning, lid seals, defrosting and checking the room are owner work; the sealed system and the defrost circuit are not.
What it looks like from the front
- Heavy frost on the walls of a manual-defrost cabinet — Frost is an insulator — past a certain thickness it costs more than it signals.
- The outside of the cabinet is hot to the touch — Normal on many designs, but with a warm interior it says the heat is not getting away.
- Packets are soft at the edges or ice cream will not hold — The earliest usable evidence, and it appears well before anything thaws.
- NEAR MISS — Nothing runs at all — That is a supply fault — start with the control and power checks rather than here.
Likely causes in order
- Frost thick enough to insulate the walls — First on this brand: a value-tier build puts the cheap wearing parts — filters, hoses, seals, screens — in the path of everything the machine does, so they are where the fault usually is. On a manual-defrost cabinet the frost layer is the heat path; once it is thick, the cabinet cannot cool no matter how hard the compressor runs.
- A condenser coil or grille choked with dust — Second: Standalone freezers usually stand where floors are dusty, and the coil or skin condenser must shed heat into the room to work at all.
- A garage, porch or outbuilding that is too cold or too hot — Third, and the last to suspect: A standalone freezer is often installed where a kitchen will not take it, and an unheated space works against the thermostat: too cold and the compressor barely runs, too hot and it cannot keep up. A store-brand unit is usually carried home and set up by the owner rather than by a delivery crew, and setup errors survive for years.
Working order
- Measure the frost with a finger against the wall — A layer thicker than a finger is worth removing regardless of anything else on this page. It goes first because it is the cheapest thing to rule out and it decides which half of this list you are in.
- Look at the coil at the back, or feel the side skins for even warmth — A dust blanket on a rear coil is visible; on a skin-condenser cabinet look instead at clearance.
- Check the room temperature where the cabinet stands — A freezer in an unheated garage in winter can stop calling for cooling entirely while its contents slowly warm.
What an owner can safely check
- Empty the cabinet into cool boxes and defrost it fully, then dry it before restarting — Leave the lid open and let it melt; do not chip at the frost with anything metal.
Tools: cool box, towelsAbout 60 min
- Unplug the cabinet and vacuum the coil, the grille and the floor around it — Then leave a clear gap at the sides and back so air can actually move over it.
Tools: vacuum, coil brushAbout 30 min
- Stop here if the next move needs a meter on live terminals — That is where an owner check ends and a service call begins.
Working safely on this machine
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Refrigerant is licensed work: oil or a hiss at the compressor means stop and call, and two people move a cabinet this size.
When to call a technician
Call when the room is within range, the coils are clean, the gasket seals and a full defrost restored cooling only temporarily — the defrost circuit and the sealed system both need the cabinet opened. One line to keep in mind while you wait: A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.

What this page does not cover
Everything above is generalized across the Criterion freezer range rather than tied to a model. There is no per-model page under this one today. Where one appears it is linked from this block and it is the page to trust for a specific cabinet. Deliberately not here: wiring colours, resistance values, torque figures and part numbers, which differ between families.
