The short answer
Owners usually call this a broken compressor. On a Cellara by Element refrigerator it is far more often a door, a coil or a vent, and the ranking below reflects what a technician actually finds. That puts a door that is not actually sealing at the top of the list here and a damper or diffuser stuck shut at the bottom.
Symptoms, including the ones that mean something else
- The cabinet is warm but the unit is clearly running — You can hear the compressor and feel the cabinet vibrate, yet the air inside is only mildly cool.
- It never cycles off — A healthy unit rests between cycles.
- NEAR MISS — only the ice supply has stopped while food is still cold — That is an ice-maker or water-supply fault. The cabinet is doing its job.
What causes this, in order of likelihood here
- A door that is not actually sealing — A gasket that has taken a set, a door resting against the latch rather than closed, or a shelf holding the door open by a hair will warm a cabinet without any other fault present. It leads on a built-in wine cabinet because the long glass door and its soft gasket stop touching at the top corner first, and the cabinet loses its band of temperature there.
- Ambient temperature outside what the unit was rated for — Refrigeration is rated against surrounding air. Cellar cabinets are routinely installed in a dining room or a converted closet, and a cabinet asked to hold cellar temperature in a warm room runs continuously without ever getting there.
- Blocked return air or a stalled evaporator fan — Cold air has to circulate. Ranked high because solid wooden racks block the return path, and an enclosed installation leaves nowhere else for the air to go.
- A damper or diffuser stuck shut — The flap that meters cold air into the fresh-food compartment can stick, leaving one side cold and the other warm with nothing else wrong.
The diagnostic order
- Read the temperature with a thermometer in a glass of water, not from the display — A display reports what the control believes.
- Check what the air around the unit is doing — Measure the room, not the cabinet.
- Put a thermometer in each compartment overnight — One reading tells you little; two compartments over a night tells you which system is failing.
What an owner can safely do
- Clear the condenser and the air path around the unit — Vacuum the coil and the grille, then restore the clearance the unit needs on its sides and back.

- Empty the door and check the gasket all the way round — Wash the gasket, warm any section that has taken a set with a cloth, and confirm the door pulls itself shut from a hand-width open.

- STOP at the point where a panel or a meter is needed — Testing a fan motor, a defrost heater or a sensor means live terminals behind a panel.

Safety
Unplug the unit or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is gone. Nothing on this page needs you to bypass a door switch, and a door switch that is defeated leaves a fan running against your hand.
Where the owner side ends
Call when the cheap checks are exhausted or when the unit runs without ever cycling off. A compressor that never rests is doing damage to itself, and the repair gets more expensive the longer that continues.
