Noise is a location problem before it is a parts problem. That puts the unit is not level or not sitting still at the top of the list here and bottles and shelves rattling at the bottom.
What the machine is doing
- A buzz or rattle that changes when you press on the cabinet — Contact noise. Something is resting against a panel, a tube or the floor, and pressure moves it.
- A whirring or chirping that stops when the door opens — The evaporator fan is switched by the door.
- A vibration felt through the floor rather than heard — A cabinet transmitting through a suspended floor, which is a levelling question.
- NEAR MISS — a hiss with no cooling at all — Treat a loss of cooling as the primary fault; the sound is secondary.
The causes, ordered
- The unit is not level or not sitting still — A cabinet on uneven feet rocks on its own vibration. How the unit was put in is part of the machine, and a bad install follows it for its whole life.
- A damper motor stepping — A small repeating click from inside the cabinet as the air flap moves. First on a cellar cabinet because the whole product is its setpoint: a zone set for reds is doing exactly what it was told while the owner reads it as a fault.
- The evaporator fan or its blade catching ice — Behind the freezer rear panel. Ranked high because solid wooden racks block the return path, and an enclosed installation leaves nowhere else for the air to go.
- Bottles and shelves rattling — The cheapest possible cause, and easy to confirm by emptying one shelf at a time.
Where to start, and what each check rules out
- Stand at the back with the unit running — If the sound is louder at the rear it lives in the compressor compartment, which removes half the candidate list at once.
- Open the door and hold the light switch in — Any sound that stops with the door is on a door-switched circuit — in practice the evaporator fan.
- Note the time of day the sound appears — A sound on a schedule is usually defrost or the ice maker rather than a fault.
What to try yourself
- Level the cabinet and load the front feet — Adjust the feet until the unit does not rock and the doors close themselves.

- Pull the unit out and look behind and underneath — Find the drip tray, the drain line and the tubing, and make sure nothing is resting against a panel or the wall.
Tools: torch
- Clean the condenser area and the fan guard — Anything loose in that compartment eventually finds the fan blade. Do this unplugged.
Tools: vacuum, soft brush
- STOP before removing the freezer rear panel — Getting to the evaporator fan means a panel, live terminals behind it and a fan that will run in your hand.

Safety
A full-size cabinet is heavier than it looks and rolls unpredictably on its wheels. Move it with help, unplug it first, and never reach behind a panel to stop a sound you can hear.
When this stops being a home repair
Call when the noise is behind the freezer rear wall, in the compressor compartment, or metallic in character. Those are motors and bearings, and they are reached with panels and a meter.
