The answer first
A cabinet that runs without getting cold is almost never a dead compressor. That puts ambient temperature outside what the unit was rated for at the top of the list here and blocked return air or a stalled evaporator fan at the bottom.
What you observe
- Frost or a solid sheet of ice on the back wall — Light dusting is normal; a sheet that hides the vents means air has stopped moving through the evaporator.
- Cold at the bottom, warm at the top — or the reverse — A temperature split inside one compartment is an air-distribution symptom rather than a refrigeration one.
- NEAR MISS — the display reads correctly but a thermometer disagrees — That is a sensor or control question, and it belongs on the controls page.
What causes this, in order of likelihood here
- Ambient temperature outside what the unit was rated for — Refrigeration is rated against surrounding air. Ranked first here because the cabinet lives outdoors: on a hot afternoon in a closed island the condenser is trying to reject heat into air that is already hotter than any indoor kitchen.
- A blocked or dirty condenser coil — The coil is how the unit gets rid of the heat it removed. Ranked high because pollen, lawn dust and grass clippings blanket an outdoor condenser far faster than household dust ever does.
- A condenser fan that has stopped — The coil can be spotless and still shed no heat if the fan beside it is not turning. Heat rejection is where a running machine quietly fails, so the coil is eliminated before anything internal is suspected.
- Blocked return air or a stalled evaporator fan — Cold air has to circulate.
Check in this order, and why
- Put a hand on the rear grille or the condenser area — Strong heat means the system is working and the problem is heat rejection.
- Check the gap behind and above the cabinet — A unit in a tight alcove is re-breathing its own warm air.
- Look for an air vent buried behind food — Cold air has to leave the vent before it can reach anything.
Step by step, as far as it is safe to go
- Clear the condenser and the air path around the unit — Vacuum the coil and the grille, then restore the clearance the unit needs on its sides and back.

- Empty the door and check the gasket all the way round — Wash the gasket, warm any section that has taken a set with a cloth, and confirm the door pulls itself shut from a hand-width open.

- STOP at the point where a panel or a meter is needed — Testing a fan motor, a defrost heater or a sensor means live terminals behind a panel.

Everything above is done with the unit plugged in and closed, or with it unplugged. The moment a panel has to come off, kill the power at the breaker first: a stored charge does not care that the machine is off. Never wedge or tape a door switch to keep a fan running while you look.
Where the owner side ends
Call once the condenser, the door and the air path are all clean and the cabinet still will not hold temperature — at that point the remaining candidates are behind a panel.
