What you are most likely looking at
Door complaints arrive as frost, as condensation or as a cabinet that never quite gets cold. On a Cavin refrigerator all three trace back to the same three parts. That puts a gasket that has taken a set or lost its magnet at the top of the list here and something inside holding the door open at the bottom.
What the machine is doing
- The gasket is hard, cracked or has a permanent flat section — Gasket material takes a set with age and cold, and a flat section never comes back on its own.
- The door alarm sounds when the door looks shut — The machine is measuring the switch, not your impression of the door.
- NEAR MISS — ice building only on the freezer back wall — That is a defrost or airflow fault rather than a door one.
The causes, ordered
- A gasket that has taken a set or lost its magnet — The commonest cause by a distance. A glass cellar door carries a soft gasket and a long hinge, and on a tall cabinet the gasket at the top corner is usually the first part to stop touching.
- A gasket lifting out of its retaining channel — Cleaning and door slams work the edge of the gasket loose, and once it lifts, that section never touches again. A seal fault never announces itself — it just costs temperature all day — which is why it is checked early despite being unglamorous.
- Humidity the cabinet was never designed for — In a humid garage or an unconditioned room, condensation appears on a perfectly good seal. Cellar cabinets are routinely installed in a dining room or a converted closet, and a cabinet asked to hold cellar temperature in a warm room runs continuously without ever getting there.
- Something inside holding the door open — A bottle in a door bin, a drawer not pushed home or a shelf out of its channel stops the door by a fraction, which is all it takes.
The order of checks
- Open the door a hand-width and let go — It should swing shut.
- Run a finger round the gasket for hard or flat sections — Age shows by feel before it shows by eye, and it tells you whether cleaning will help or not.
- Look at the gap at the top corner with the door shut — A door that has dropped is visible from a few steps back, and it is the check most owners skip.
The checks you can do without a meter
- Warm a flattened gasket section and work it back out — A warm cloth held against a set section for a while restores some of the shape.

- Level the cabinet so the door closes itself — Adjust the front feet until the unit does not rock and the door swings shut from a hand-width open.

- STOP before loosening hinge bolts to realign a loaded door — A heavy door on a slackened hinge falls, and it takes the frame with it.

Empty a door before touching its hinges — loaded doors are heavy and a slackened hinge lets one fall. Unplug the cabinet before any switch or heater work, and remember a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
When this stops being a home repair
Cleaning, levelling and clearing the swing are yours. A replacement gasket, a hinge realignment on a loaded door or a door switch are the technician side of the line, and a cabinet that cannot hold a safe temperature because of the door should not be left for weeks.
