What you are most likely looking at
Gaskets fail slowly and silently. On a Capital refrigerator the cost shows up as runtime and frost long before anyone notices a gap. That puts a cabinet that is not level at the top of the list here and humidity the cabinet was never designed for at the bottom.
What you observe
- Condensation or frost around the door frame — Warm room air is reaching cold surfaces. That only happens where the seal has stopped touching.
- A visible gap, usually at one top corner — A dropped door shows first at the corner furthest from the hinge.
- NEAR MISS — water pooling inside the base of the cabinet — That is usually a blocked defrost drain rather than a door fault, and it belongs on the leak page.
The causes, ordered
- A cabinet that is not level — Doors are hung to close themselves on a cabinet standing slightly nose-high. First on pro-style equipment because these units are heavy, are levelled into a cabinet run, and a unit that was never levelled or vented to its own spec produces most of the complaints that follow.
- A gasket that has taken a set or lost its magnet — The commonest cause by a distance. A gasket squashed flat on one section stops touching there, and the cabinet loses cold at that point all day. A seal fault never announces itself — it just costs temperature all day — which is why it is checked early despite being unglamorous.
- A gasket lifting out of its retaining channel — Cleaning and door slams work the edge of the gasket loose, and once it lifts, that section never touches again. It earns this position because it is free to test and it produces the symptom entirely on its own.
- Humidity the cabinet was never designed for — In a humid garage or an unconditioned room, condensation appears on a perfectly good seal. The fix is the room, not the door.
Where to start, and what each check rules out
- Run a hand along the inside of the door frame after an hour closed — Damp anywhere means air is getting in at that point.
- Look at the gasket where it meets the hinge side — The channel usually lets go at a corner, and it is visible once you look for it.
- Watch the door close from the side, at eye level — A door that meets the frame unevenly is a hinge or levelling problem.
The checks you can do without a meter
- Rearrange the door bins so nothing tall fouls the swing — Close the door slowly and watch what touches first.
- Rub a thin film of petroleum jelly onto a stiff gasket — It restores some flexibility on an old seal and stops it dragging as the door closes.

- STOP before loosening hinge bolts to realign a loaded door — A heavy door on a slackened hinge falls, and it takes the frame with it. That adjustment is worth a technician.

Safety
Doors on full-size cabinets are heavier than they look, and a loaded door on a slackened hinge will drop. Unplug the unit before any hinge or switch work — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off — and never tape or wedge a door switch to keep the light off.
When to call a technician
Cleaning, reseating and levelling are yours and they fix a good share of door complaints. Gaskets, hinges, frame heaters and door switches are technician parts.
