A cabinet that runs without getting cold is almost never a dead compressor. That puts clearance the installation never gave it at the top of the list here and a blocked or dirty condenser coil at the bottom.
Symptoms, including the ones that mean something else
- Ice cream is soft but nothing has thawed — A small, consistent temperature rise rather than a failure — often a door or an ambient change.
- Condensation inside the cabinet walls — Warm humid air is entering somewhere and meeting cold surfaces.
- It only struggles in hot weather — A margin problem: the unit is coping until the room gets warm.
- NEAR MISS — the display reads correctly but a thermometer disagrees — That is a sensor or control question, and it belongs on the controls page.
Causes, most likely first on this unit
- Clearance the installation never gave it — Cabinets are rated with a stated gap at the back and sides. Built into a tight alcove, the unit re-breathes its own warm air. First on pro-style equipment because these units are heavy, are levelled into a cabinet run, and a unit that was never levelled or vented to its own spec produces most of the complaints that follow.
- Blocked return air or a stalled evaporator fan — Cold air has to circulate. Pro cabinets are deep and are usually installed flush, so the return path behind them is the first thing an installation takes away.
- A damper or diffuser stuck shut — The flap that meters cold air into the fresh-food compartment can stick, leaving one side cold and the other warm with nothing else wrong. Air distribution decides what the owner feels, so a blocked path outranks the components behind it.
- A blocked or dirty condenser coil — The coil is how the unit gets rid of the heat it removed.
Where to start, and what each check rules out
- Put a thermometer in each compartment overnight — One reading tells you little; two compartments over a night tells you which system is failing.
- Check the gap behind and above the cabinet — A unit in a tight alcove is re-breathing its own warm air.
- Look for an air vent buried behind food — Cold air has to leave the vent before it can reach anything.
What an owner can safely do
- Unload the interior enough to clear every vent — Pull items away from the rear wall and the vent openings, then leave the unit closed for a full day before judging it.
- Run a full manual defrost if you found ice — Empty the cabinet, switch it off and leave the doors open until the coil is clear and dry.

- STOP at the point where a panel or a meter is needed — Testing a fan motor, a defrost heater or a sensor means live terminals behind a panel.

Move a full-size cabinet with help rather than alone: they are top-heavy on wheels and they catch on flooring. Unplug before touching anything behind a panel, and remember stored charge remains after the supply is cut.
The line between a fix and a service call
If the coil is clean, the doors seal, the vents are clear and a day has passed with no improvement, the next tests are behind a panel with a meter. Call sooner if the freezer has thawed, because food safety sets the clock rather than the fault does.
